A unidirectional bezel turns only one way; on dive watches, that is typically counterclockwise. A bidirectional bezel turns both clockwise and counterclockwise. The one-way design is a safety measure for tracking elapsed dive time: if the bezel is knocked, it cannot make the elapsed time appear shorter than it is. A two-way bezel is easier to reposition, but its purpose depends on the watch’s markings and design.
How the two bezel types differ

How a unidirectional dive bezel tracks elapsed time
- At the start: Align the bezel’s triangle or zero marker with the minute hand.
- As time passes: Read the minute hand against the bezel scale to see elapsed minutes.
- If the bezel is bumped: On a counterclockwise-only design, the reading can indicate more elapsed time, not less. That conservative error can prompt an earlier end to a dive rather than a later one.
TUDOR gives this procedure for its diving watches, and Seiko explains the same safety rationale in its rotating-bezel instructions. Follow the manual for your particular watch.

What a bidirectional bezel is for
Because it turns either way, a bidirectional bezel is quicker to reposition when setting a timing reference. TAG Heuer’s guide describes a bidirectional bezel used to measure time intervals, while Rolex’s Yacht-Master feature page provides a model example. Those examples do not make every bidirectional bezel interchangeable: its markings and the watch’s design determine what it can do.

A bidirectional bezel is not automatically a GMT bezel. GMT use depends on the watch’s timekeeping features and bezel markings, not simply on whether the bezel moves in two directions.

Does a rotating bezel mean a watch is a dive watch?
No. A rotating bezel alone does not establish that a watch is suitable or certified for scuba diving. ISO describes ISO 6425 as covering watches that can be used while scuba diving, and ISO 22810 as addressing watches intended for daily use and swimming. Citizen says it reserves “diver’s watch” for models conforming to ISO 6425. These broad descriptions distinguish intended categories; they are not a complete account of the current standard’s requirements. See the ISO overview and Citizen’s diver’s-watch explanation.

Which type should you choose?
- For elapsed dive-time tracking: Look for a watch designed for diving with a unidirectional bezel, and verify the watch’s stated suitability and instructions rather than relying on the bezel alone.
- For general interval timing or a specific bezel function: A bidirectional bezel may be convenient, provided its scale is suited to the task.
- For any specialized use: Check the model’s manual. The direction of rotation by itself does not tell you every function the bezel supports.
