What Do the Numbers and Markings on a Watch Bezel Mean?

Watch bezel markings may track elapsed time, another time zone, a rate or direction. Learn how to identify common scales and read them correctly.

A watch bezel is the ring around the crystal, and its numbers and symbols form a scale. What that scale measures depends on the watch: it might track elapsed minutes, show a second time zone, calculate a rate, or help indicate direction. Identify the bezel type before reading it, and check the watch’s manual for model-specific instructions.

How to identify a bezel scale

Start by looking at the markings and the hands used with them. Minute graduations and a zero marker often indicate an elapsed-time scale; a 24-hour ring is commonly paired with a GMT hand; a tachymeter is read with a chronograph; and compass markings use cardinal directions. Bezel designs vary, so numerals alone do not always reveal how a particular watch works. Timex’s bezel guide and TAG Heuer’s bezel overview describe the range of uses.

Bezel type What it indicates What you read it with
Dive or elapsed-time Elapsed minutes, or in some designs a countdown Usually the minute hand
GMT or 24-hour Time in another time zone The GMT hand and 24-hour scale
Tachymeter A rate, commonly units per hour The chronograph’s elapsed-time hand and a known interval or distance
Compass Approximate direction Cardinal markings and the prescribed orientation method

How to read a dive or elapsed-time bezel

A common dive bezel has minute graduations and a zero marker, often a triangle or luminous pip. To measure elapsed time, align the zero marker with the minute hand when the event starts. As the hand moves, read its position against the bezel to see how many minutes have passed. The approach can also be used as a simple countdown on some designs: align the mark for the intended remaining time with the minute hand. The direction and exact procedure depend on the watch.

On the cited Seiko design, the bezel rotates only counterclockwise. That one-way arrangement means an accidental turn is designed not to make elapsed time appear shorter than it is. Seiko says to use the bezel’s elapsed-time display “only as a guide during diving”; it is not a substitute for monitoring remaining air or using proper dive equipment. See Seiko’s rotating-bezel instructions.

How to read a GMT or 24-hour bezel

A GMT bezel has a 24-hour scale and is used with a GMT hand to read another time zone. On some watches, rotating the bezel changes the offset represented by the scale, allowing the wearer to track a different zone. How to set or interpret the hand and bezel is not identical across all GMT watches, so follow the instructions for the specific model. Tudor explains the GMT function and bezel operation in its GMT guide.

How to read a tachymeter

A tachymeter converts elapsed time for a known event or distance into a rate, commonly speed. On a chronograph, start timing at the beginning of a known unit of distance and stop at its end; the chronograph hand’s position on the scale indicates the rate. On a conventional units-per-hour scale, a 45-second interval corresponds to about 80 units per hour. That is a reading of the scale, not a measurement independent of the chosen unit or conditions. Scale layouts and units can differ, so check the watch’s instructions. Citizen’s functions guide illustrates a tachymeter scale.

How to interpret compass markings

A compass bezel may show N, E, S and W, sometimes with intermediate directions. The markings need to be used with the watch oriented according to the method specified for that design. Citizen illustrates a sun-and-hour-hand method for the Northern Hemisphere; it depends on the hemisphere and a correctly set local time, so it should not be treated as universal navigation guidance. A watch compass is an approximate aid, not a replacement for a reliable compass or navigation training. See the Citizen functions guide for its illustrated method.

What if the scale is unfamiliar?

Some watches use countdown scales or other specialized graduations, and the markings are not standardized across every model. Do not infer a scale’s purpose from its numbers alone. Look up the model’s manual or the manufacturer’s operating instructions before using it, especially when the scale affects timing or navigation. General explanations from Timex and TAG Heuer can help identify common types, but the watch’s own instructions govern its operation.
