Case size, dial and design
The 36 mm diameter is the headline dimension, but the other measurements help put it in context: the technical drawing gives a 43.7 mm lug-to-lug span and the case is 11.05 mm thick. Those figures describe the watch; they do not guarantee how it will fit a particular wrist. In Hodinkee’s February 20, 2024 launch article, Anthony Traina noted wearing it on a 6.25-inch wrist. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a universal fit assessment.

The Grigio Milano outline dial uses cool-gray glossy markers and matching skeleton hands. UNIMATIC’s description emphasizes an open seconds rail and restrained trims. The result, on paper, is a deliberately spare display in a steel case; whether its contrast and legibility suit you is best judged from the watch in person.
Movement and stated performance
The automatic Sellita SW200-1 b offers both self-winding and manual winding, with hacking seconds for stopping the seconds hand while setting the time. UNIMATIC specifies 28,800 beats per hour and 26 jewels. Its listed accuracy range is +12 seconds per day up to +30 seconds per day; preserve that as the manufacturer’s stated range rather than treating it as a guarantee or a result measured on a particular watch.

UNIMATIC gives a minimum power reserve of 38 hours and a typical figure of 41 hours. The technical sheet does not establish how a specific example will perform in use.
Water resistance: understand the rating and its limits
UNIMATIC rates the U5S-A at 300 m, also expressed as 1,000 ft and 30 atm, and says each watch is individually tested for water resistance. Those are the maker’s claims, not an independent test result. A published rating also cannot establish the present seal condition of a used, damaged or poorly maintained example; have the condition of an individual watch assessed before relying on it around water.

Strap size and choosing an alternative
The U5S-A has 22 mm lugs. It is supplied with a quick-release TPU strap that tapers from 22 to 20 mm, plus a calf-leather strap that tapers from 22 to 18 mm. Both are two-piece straps, and the listed hardware is brushed stainless steel signed UNIMATIC.
A 22 mm nominal width is a starting point, not proof that any strap will fit or feel right. When shopping for an alternative, check the lug width, attachment method and spring-bar or quick-release arrangement, along with material, taper, strap length and buckle finish. In particular, confirm that the strap’s attachment system is compatible with the watch and that its length suits your wrist.

U5S-A and U5S-AN: the launch-era distinction
At launch, Hodinkee described the U5S-A as the steel version and the U5S-AN as its black DLC alternative. They are distinct references; do not assume other Modello Cinque variants share every U5S-A measurement or specification.

Hodinkee’s launch coverage framed the 36 mm model as a smaller departure from earlier UNIMATIC designs that had felt larger to the writer. Traina also called it the most wearable Modello yet—his subjective 2024 verdict, not a measured or universal conclusion. The article recalled comments by UNIMATIC co-founder Simone Nunziato from a prior Hodinkee visit: “Minimalism is a good term, but it’s not a choice,” and “It’s not minimalistic for the sake of it; it’s because we don’t need more.” That remark provides brand-design context rather than a technical claim about this reference.
