The Apple Watch GMT face shows your local time on a conventional 12-hour dial and one selected second time zone on a 24-hour outer scale. The red hand points to the hour in that second zone. Tap the face, rotate the Digital Crown, and confirm to change the selected location.
It is a useful, analog-style way to monitor one overseas office, home time zone, or travel destination—but it is not a complete second analog clock and is less suitable than World Clock for several cities or date-sensitive scheduling.

What the Apple Watch GMT face shows
In traditional watchmaking, GMT refers to a watch that tracks a second time zone using a 24-hour scale. On Apple Watch, the concept is implemented in software rather than by a mechanical GMT movement.
- Inner dial: Your Apple Watch’s local time, read with the ordinary hour and minute hands.
- Outer ring: A 24-hour scale for the selected second time zone.
- Red hand: The hour in that second time zone.
The 24-hour scale is important because it distinguishes morning from evening. A reading of 7 can mean 7 a.m. or 7 p.m. depending on which half of the scale the red hand reaches.

Apple’s documentation describes the red hand as showing the second zone’s hour. Do not treat it as a second conventional clock with independently precise hour and minute hands. The face also should not be assumed to show the second zone’s date, elapsed time, or a permanently fixed UTC offset. See Apple’s current watch-face documentation for availability and feature details.
How to read the GMT face in seconds
- Read the normal hour and minute hands on the inner dial to get local time.
- Find the red hand and follow it to the outer 24-hour scale.
- Read that position as the hour in the selected second time zone.
- Check whether the red hand is on the a.m. or p.m. half of the ring.
For example, if your local time is 10:20 a.m. and the red hand points to 5 on the evening half of the outer ring, the selected location is at approximately 5 p.m. The GMT face is therefore excellent for a quick “is it reasonable to call?” check.
For an overnight example, your local time might be 1:10 a.m. while the red hand indicates 6 p.m. in the previous evening at the selected location. That distinction matters when coordinating work across continents.

How to change the second time zone
To change the zone directly on the watch:
- Display the GMT watch face.
- Tap the face.
- Rotate the Digital Crown to choose a time zone.
- Tap the on-screen confirmation button.
The red hand then represents the hour in the newly selected zone. This changes the GMT face’s reference location; it does not change the Apple Watch’s actual local time, region, or system time-zone settings.
If the control does not appear, edit or remove and re-add the face through the Apple Watch app. Apple’s Watch settings guide explains the Face Gallery and face-management controls.
How to add and customize the GMT face
On the Apple Watch
- Touch and hold the current watch face.
- Swipe through the available faces.
- Select GMT, or tap the add button if it is shown.
- Customize the available options and complications.
- Press the Digital Crown or tap the face to finish.
Using the iPhone Watch app
- Open the Apple Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Tap Face Gallery.
- Select GMT.
- Choose a color and configure the complication positions.
- Tap Add to place it among your watch faces.
Apple officially lists color customization for the GMT face. The available face list can differ by Apple Watch model, software version, country, or region; Apple states that not every face is available everywhere.
GMT complications: what to add
Apple lists four complication positions for the GMT face. Depending on your model, region, installed apps, and software version, available choices may include World Clock, Calendar, Weather, Battery, Activity, Timers, Reminders, Messages, Workout, Compass, Stocks, Sleep, Music, and Alarms.

Useful combinations include:
- World Clock: Adds a more explicit digital reference when the red hand is not enough.
- Calendar: Helpful for meetings and travel days, but check the second zone separately when dates cross midnight.
- Weather: Practical when the face is used at a destination.
- Messages and Alarms: Useful for remote workers coordinating across time zones.
- Workout or Activity: Better suited to travelers who also want fitness information at a glance.
To edit complications, touch and hold the face, tap Edit, swipe left to the complication screen, tap a position, rotate the Digital Crown to choose a replacement, and press the Digital Crown to save. Apple documents this process in its guide to adding complications.
GMT face versus World Clock
| Need | GMT face | World Clock |
|---|---|---|
| One second zone at a glance | Excellent | Excellent with a suitable complication |
| Traditional analog appearance | Strong | Usually less prominent |
| Exact digital numerals | Less direct | Clearer |
| Several locations | Limited | Better |
| City labels and date awareness | Limited | Better |
Choose GMT when one other location matters most—such as home and an overseas office. Choose World Clock when you regularly monitor three or more cities, need explicit labels, or schedule meetings around the date as well as the hour. Neither should be described as inherently more accurate: both depend on the Apple Watch’s time-zone data and synchronization.
GMT versus other Apple Watch faces
| Face | Best for |
|---|---|
| GMT | One recurring second time zone with an analog watch look |
| Infograph | Many rich complications and dense information |
| Modular | Large, immediately readable digital information |
| Utility or Simple | A minimal display with fewer distractions |
| Wayfinder or Modular Ultra | Ultra owners prioritizing outdoor, compass, elevation, or training information |
| World Time-style faces or World Clock complications | Several time zones or more explicit location information |
Face availability and complication support vary by model and region. Check Apple’s current compatibility notes before assuming a particular face is supported.

The GMT face does not appear
Possible reasons include outdated watchOS, model or regional restrictions, an incomplete face list, or a managed or restricted Apple Watch configuration. Update watchOS where supported, open the iPhone Watch app and check Face Gallery, confirm that the watch is paired and synchronized, then remove and re-add the face. Apple’s availability notes remain the final reference.

The time appears wrong
- Confirm that the local time on the Apple Watch is correct.
- Confirm which reference zone the GMT face is using.
- Check whether daylight saving time has changed the relationship between the locations.
- Check date and region settings on the paired iPhone.
- Allow the watch to synchronize with the iPhone or network.
- Remove and re-add the face if its selector behaves incorrectly.
- Restart the watch and iPhone, then install available updates.
Do not manually alter the watch’s clock just to correct the red hand. That can create a larger local-time problem.
Daylight saving time causes confusion
Select a geographic time zone, not merely a permanent offset. London and New York, for example, are not always five hours apart because their daylight-saving changes do not occur on the same dates. Recheck the selected location after travel and seasonal clock changes.
The red hand is difficult to see
Try a higher-contrast color, a simpler configuration, and less visually busy complications. Accessibility settings that improve text size or contrast may help, but a digital World Clock complication is the better solution if rapid recognition is essential.

Magnetic interference is principally an issue for the Compass app, not the GMT face’s time-zone calculation. Apple warns that magnetic materials in some bands can affect compass readings; do not confuse compass accuracy with time-zone accuracy. See Apple’s Compass guidance.

Do you need a new Apple Watch?
Do not buy a new Apple Watch solely to obtain the GMT face. First check your current model, watchOS version, region, and Face Gallery. A new purchase is sensible only if you also want benefits such as a newer display, health features, cellular connectivity, greater durability, battery improvements, or longer software support.
For U.S. shoppers, Apple’s current shop pages list the Apple Watch SE 3 from $249, Series 11 from $399, and Ultra 3 at roughly $700–$799 depending on the listing and configuration retrieved on August 18, 2026. Prices, sizes, materials, and cellular options change, so verify them directly at Apple’s Watch store. Cellular service is not required for the GMT face.
Who should use the GMT face?
The GMT face is a strong choice if you regularly track one other time zone, travel between two regions, work with an overseas team, or prefer an analog display. It is less suitable if you need several cities, large digital numerals, city names, detailed travel information, or reliable second-zone date awareness.
