Contemporary coverage found no clear evidence that either build introduced six brand-new, beta-3-exclusive features. Most of the features associated with the headline belonged to the broader watchOS 26 update.
watchOS 26 was released as a stable update on September 15, 2025, so this is now a historical explanation of what beta 3 did—and did not—add.

The original BGR headline referred to the July developer release, but BGR also acknowledged that it was unclear what had changed in beta 3 and speculated that Apple was concentrating on bug fixes and battery life. BGR’s report does not establish six new features exclusive to that build.

The six features associated with the headline
These were legitimate watchOS 26 features, but they should not be presented as six discoveries made in beta 3.
1. Liquid Glass redesign
watchOS 26 adopted Apple’s Liquid Glass visual language across menus, controls and navigation. The redesign also affected areas such as the Smart Stack and elements of the Photos watch face. It was a broad visual and interface change—not a feature first documented as part of beta 3.
2. Workout Buddy
Workout Buddy uses Apple Intelligence-related capabilities to provide personalized encouragement during workouts. Its availability depends on compatible hardware, the paired-device setup, supported software, language and region. It should therefore be described as a watchOS 26 feature, not as a guaranteed addition in beta 3.
3. A redesigned Workout app
Apple updated the Workout experience with a more prominent interface and changes intended to make workout controls and information easier to access. The redesign formed part of the overall watchOS 26 release.

4. More contextual Smart Stack suggestions
The Smart Stack gained more contextual and actionable suggestions, using factors such as the user’s situation and activity. Suggestions may vary by Apple Watch model, paired iPhone, account configuration and Apple Intelligence support, so the experience is not identical on every compatible watch.
5. Messages improvements
watchOS 26 expanded Messages with features including Live Translation and improved Smart Replies. These functions can require a compatible Apple Watch and paired iPhone, as well as supported languages and regions. Some reporting highlighted Series 9-and-newer hardware for Live Translation-related capabilities, but that should not be treated as the complete watchOS 26 compatibility list.
6. Notes on Apple Watch
The Notes app came to Apple Watch. Users can view notes, create notes with Siri, dictation or the keyboard, pin and unlock notes, and complete checklist items. Apple documents this as part of watchOS 26 in its official feature overview.

That means beta 3 was primarily about fixing defects, improving stability and performance, and refining the existing watchOS 26 experience. Battery improvements were suggested by BGR as a possible focus, but they should not be presented as a confirmed benefit for every user.
Features can also arrive in earlier or later beta builds, change during testing, or be restricted to particular models and regions. Apple’s watchOS release-note index is the appropriate place to check build-specific changes.
How public beta installation worked

- Update the paired iPhone to the required compatible iOS version.
- Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Go to My Watch → General → Software Update → Beta Updates.
- Select the available watchOS public beta and begin the update.
During installation, keep the Apple Watch on its charger, at least 50% charged, near the paired iPhone and connected through the normal Wi-Fi update process. The exact labels or availability can change between Apple software versions.

Developer beta access is intended for members of Apple’s developer software ecosystem. Developers should use Apple’s official developer enrollment information and release notes rather than unofficial configuration profiles or download sites.

Most primary-watch users should not. A beta is reasonable for developers testing watchOS apps or enthusiasts with a spare Apple Watch who can tolerate problems. It is a poor choice for anyone who relies on one watch for health and fitness tracking, sleep monitoring, notifications, Apple Pay, work or emergency functions.
Potential benefits
- Early access to the Liquid Glass interface and other watchOS 26 features.
- Time to test Workout Buddy, Notes, Messages changes and Smart Stack behavior.
- An opportunity for developers to validate applications before the final release.
Risks and trade-offs
- Unexpected battery drain, overheating, crashes or pairing problems.
- Unreliable notifications, missing apps or incompatibility with accessories and third-party software.
- Health and fitness functions that may not behave reliably during testing.
- Features that are changed, removed or deferred in later builds.
- Limited or impractical ordinary self-service rollback if the beta causes problems.
Back up the paired iPhone and confirm that important health and fitness data is syncing before installation. Apple Watch beta software should be treated as difficult to recover from, not like a low-risk app beta. If the watch becomes unusable, Apple Support or an Apple Store may be necessary; do not assume that a simple downgrade is available.
Compatibility and feature limitations
A watchOS 26-compatible Apple Watch did not necessarily receive every watchOS 26 function. Availability can depend on:

Apple specifically warns that some features may not be available in every country or region. Check Apple’s current compatibility and feature documentation rather than assuming that buying the newest watch is required—or that every feature works on every supported model.
If the beta does not appear
Check these items in order:
- Confirm that the Apple Account is enrolled in the relevant public or developer beta channel.
- Make sure the paired iPhone is running the required software.
- Verify that the Watch app is signed in with the expected Apple Account.
- Connect the watch to its charger and ensure it has at least 50% battery.
- Keep the watch and iPhone close together and check Wi-Fi connectivity.
- Confirm that the watch model is supported and that the build is still being offered.
Current status
For most readers, the practical lesson is simple: beta 3 was a real test build, but the six features belonged mainly to the wider watchOS 26 story. Anyone seeking those features was better served by waiting for the stable release rather than installing a beta based on an overstated feature count.
