What makes the EMC SR-71 different?
The EMC SR-71 marks the tenth anniversary of URWERK’s EMC concept. It is not an aircraft component, nor is it an electronic watch: a mechanical movement keeps time, while a separate monitoring system lets the wearer check its rate and make a fine adjustment.

URWERK says material from an SR-71 fuselage was melted down and worked into the charging crank; the brand’s specifications also identify the screw-down bezel as SR-71 alloy. The official press material describes the alloy as including titanium, aluminium, vanadium, silicon, iron, molybdenum and additional constituents. The dial’s separate instrument-like displays are described as a reference to the aircraft’s cockpit.
URWERK co-founder and artistic director Martin Frei put the design idea this way: “The layout of the screens composing the dial is reminiscent of the SR-71’s cockpit instruments, and not without reason”, explains URWERK’s artistic director and co-founder Martin Frei. “A watch, like an aircraft, is a machine that provides information about its performance. The watch face is a personal cockpit; in addition to the exact time, the EMC also provides information about how it works and how it is piloted. It’s a unique and exciting experience. My fascination with all things science fiction, space travel and aviation made me particularly keen to work on this project with Jason and Roman from Dreamland.”

How does the EMC measure the watch’s accuracy?
The timekeeping and measurement jobs are distinct. The manually wound UR-EMC calibre runs the watch mechanically. To use the monitoring function, the wearer winds a dedicated handle to power a Maxon micro-generator and activates the indicator. An optical sensor reads the balance’s oscillation; the electronic system then communicates the measured performance through a delta (δ) indicator. URWERK specifies a 16,000,000 Hz electronic oscillator in the monitoring system.
The reading is a user-triggered check, not continuous electronic regulation of the escapement. After checking performance, the wearer can use a screw on the back to make a fine rate adjustment. URWERK describes the broader EMC system as enabling owners to monitor and adjust timing to suit personal use; that does not mean the electronic module drives or continuously corrects the mechanical movement.
