The crank does more than evoke the spy plane: it powers a micro-generator for the watch’s electronic rate-measurement system. The limited-edition model was developed for the EMC’s tenth anniversary with collector and designer Jason Sarkoyan and aeronautical engineer Dr Roman Sperl.
What connects this watch to the SR-71 Blackbird?
URWERK says material from an SR-71 fuselage was melted down and worked into the crank handle. The material was provided by Jason Sarkoyan and Dr Roman Sperl. The maker says its exact composition was not known to them, describing it as containing titanium, aluminium, vanadium, silicon, iron, molybdenum “and more.” That is the maker’s description, not a fully specified alloy recipe.
The aircraft connection is also reflected in the dial design. URWERK co-founder and artistic director Martin Frei said, “The layout of the screens composing the dial is reminiscent of the SR-71’s cockpit instruments, and not without reason”.
What does the manual crank do?
Turning the crank winds the watch’s electronic measurement system by driving a micro-generator. It is therefore a functional control, not just a piece of aircraft-themed decoration. The system lets the wearer check the mechanical movement’s rate against an electronic reference and make timing adjustments.

How the EMC rate-checking system works
The EMC combines a mechanical movement with an electronic measurement unit. URWERK describes the system as measuring against a 16,000,000 Hz reference; an optical sensor reads the balance’s behavior for comparison. New Atlas’s August 25, 2024 explanation likewise describes the crank-driven micro-generator and optical measurement. The display gives the wearer information about rate performance; it is not a replacement for a watchmaker’s full service or an independent certification of accuracy.
URWERK describes its in-house movement as tested in four positions over a 30-day cycle. That is the maker’s stated testing procedure, not an independently reported test result for every individual watch.

URWERK’s 30 m / 3 ATM figure is a maker specification. It should not be read as a promise that the watch is suitable for swimming or diving.
How it differs from other SR-71 watches
The SR-71 name appears on watches from other brands, but shared aircraft inspiration does not make them versions of the URWERK. Their movements, materials, specifications and availability are distinct.

URWERK documents a ten-piece edition, but its press document does not establish current stock, a current authorized seller, or an Amazon listing. Treat any offer as something to verify directly with the seller: confirm the model reference, provenance of the specific watch, condition, service history and whether the seller can document authorized status.
