Which Vacheron Constantin 222 is this?
The current steel Historiques 222 is reference 4200H/222A-B934. It has a blue dial, steel case and integrated steel bracelet. The yellow-gold reference is 4200H/222J-B935, a separate model introduced in 2022. Because prices and specifications in this guide concern different references and markets, the distinction matters: the Canadian price below is for the steel watch, not the gold launch model.
The 222 was introduced in 1977 to mark Vacheron Constantin’s 222nd anniversary. The modern watch preserves the family’s barrel-shaped profile, fluted bezel, integrated bracelet and Maltese cross motif at 5 o’clock. Designer Jorg Hysek described his approach to the original as seeking “an elegant sporty timepiece” that balanced sportiness with Vacheron Constantin’s classic, refined character. How much does the steel 222 cost?
Price depends on the reference, country and tax treatment. Vacheron Constantin’s Canadian English page displayed CAD 48,400 before tax for steel reference 4200H/222A-B934 when accessed on October 8, 2026. For Switzerland, Index of Watches reported an official steel list price of CHF 32,200, verified August 31, 2026. These are separate regional references, not currency conversions or tax-equivalent prices. Check the manufacturer’s local page or an authorized boutique for a current quote.

What it is like as a modern re-edition
The 37 mm diameter is paired with a 7.95 mm case thickness, giving the watch a slim profile on paper while retaining the integrated-bracelet form that defines the design. Its brushed and polished steel surfaces, blue matte dial and fluted bezel keep the visual emphasis on shape and finishing rather than added complications. The date sits at 3 o’clock; the movement also includes a balance stop, and the date is quick-set according to Monochrome’s account of the re-edition.
Calibre 2455/2 is an automatic movement with a 40-hour reserve and a 4 Hz frequency. The sapphire caseback makes it visible, a contemporary display feature absent from the original’s monobloc construction. This is a modern interpretation, not a reproduction of the vintage watch’s movement or case architecture.

How does it compare with the original 222?
Monochrome’s 2022 retrospective describes the original 1977 Jumbo as 37 mm across and around 7 mm thick, with a steel version rated to 120 m and powered by the VC1120, based on Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre 920. By comparison, the current steel re-edition is 7.95 mm thick, rated to 50 m, and uses calibre 2455/2. The figures come from different sources and eras: current re-edition specifications are from Vacheron Constantin, while the vintage details are Monochrome’s historical reporting.

The modern model therefore preserves the recognizable proportions and design language but makes a clear trade: a visible modern movement and contemporary construction in place of the original’s thinner profile and higher reported water rating. Historical specifications are reported by Monochrome Watches; current steel specifications are listed by Vacheron Constantin.

Steel or gold: keep the references straight
The steel 4200H/222A-B934 and gold 4200H/222J-B935 share the 37 mm re-edition design, but they are not interchangeable price comparisons. The 2022 Monochrome launch coverage concerned the yellow-gold version, which it described at launch as part of the permanent collection and boutique-exclusive at that time. That historical availability statement does not establish current stock or present availability for either reference.
