The watches also differ in documented movement functions and case specifications, so the relevant question is what each example offers and what comparable examples actually sell for.
The question first appeared in a Fratello Watches article published June 27, 2018. Its prices are historical, not current buying guidance. The present comparison uses manufacturer specifications for the steel Vacheron Historiques Cornes de Vache 1955, reference 5000H/000A-B582, and the listed white-gold configuration of the Lange 1815 Chronograph.
What watches are being compared?
“Les Historiques” identifies a Vacheron Constantin collection, not one fixed chronograph specification. The current manufacturer page cited here describes the steel Historiques Cornes de Vache 1955, reference 5000H/000A-B582. The Lange comparison is the 1815 Chronograph, for which the official page lists a 39.5 mm white-gold case configuration. Different metals, dials and reference generations can change both the purchase price and the comparison.
Vacheron says the steel Cornes de Vache pays tribute to its 1955 reference 6087. That context matters: the modern watch is a specific design and reference, not a generic proxy for every Vacheron chronograph.

What does the movement comparison tell you?
Lange adds specific chronograph behavior
The Lange’s flyback function allows the chronograph to be reset and restarted in one continuous operation, rather than stopping it first. Its precisely jumping minute counter is another stated functional distinction. Those features, together with a 60-hour reserve, describe what the movement does; they do not by themselves establish what a buyer should pay on the secondary market.

Vacheron offers a different specification
The cited Vacheron uses a manually wound, column-wheel-controlled calibre 1142 and records elapsed time up to 30 minutes. Its 48-hour reserve is shorter than the Lange’s listed 60 hours. The difference in frequency—21,600 vibrations per hour for Vacheron versus 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour for Lange—is a technical distinction, not a standalone measure of quality or value.
Does Lange’s finishing explain a higher pre-owned price?
It may be part of how enthusiasts assess the watches, but the available evidence does not prove that it causes a resale-price difference. In the 2018 Fratello article, the author judged Lange’s hand finishing to be at a higher standard. That is an attributed opinion, not a neutral measurement or a manufacturer-certified ranking. Finishing is also only one part of a buyer’s decision alongside reference, material, condition, provenance and service history.

The cited sources do not provide matched current asking prices or completed-sale data for comparable examples. They therefore cannot establish either a current premium for the Lange or the size—or cause—of any price gap.
What did the 2018 price comparison actually say?
Fratello’s June 27, 2018 article cited figures of around €50,000, €56,500 and €49,000 in its discussion of the watches. Those are historical price statements from that article. They are not current retail prices, current pre-owned market values or a condition-matched transaction series, and they should not be used to estimate what either watch costs now. How to judge whether a used example is a better buy
- Match the reference and metal. Identify the full reference number, case material and dial configuration. Do not compare a steel Vacheron with a gold Lange as though the material difference were irrelevant.
- Compare like with like on condition. Look closely at case condition and signs of polishing, dial and hands, chronograph operation, and whether the watch is complete. A difference in condition can matter more than a headline brand comparison.
- Check provenance and service records. Establish what documentation accompanies the watch and when it was last serviced. Include any service work needed when weighing an asking price.
- Use comparable market evidence. Compare same-period sales or carefully qualified asking prices for the same reference and metal, with condition, completeness and service history in view. An asking price is not proof of a completed sale.
- Choose for the watch you want to wear. Decide whether the Lange’s flyback and jumping minute counter, longer listed reserve and white-gold configuration—or the Vacheron’s steel case, dimensions and 30-minute totalizer—better suit your preferences.
So, why might the Vacheron appear more affordable?
The evidence supports a careful answer, not a single-cause verdict. A perceived gap could reflect differences in the exact reference, case metal, condition, completeness, service status, buyer demand or the prices selected for comparison. Lange’s finishing reputation may influence some buyers, but neither the 2018 commentary nor the cited manufacturer pages quantify its effect. Without current, matched sales data, the claim that one is “so much more affordable” should be checked against specific examples rather than treated as a fixed market rule.
