The Vaer D5 Pacific Anacapa and R1 Tactical are built for different jobs: the D5 is a 39mm automatic dive watch with a stated 20 ATM rating, while the R1 is a 40mm meca-quartz field chronograph rated to 10 ATM. Choose the D5 for a traditional diver and automatic movement; choose the R1 if a stopwatch is more useful than a rotating dive bezel. The specifications below come from Vaer’s product information, not independent hands-on testing.

Water-resistance figures are manufacturer ratings, not a guarantee that either watch is suitable for every dive or water activity. Condition, crown position and the activity itself matter.

Is the D5 Pacific the better choice for diving?
The D5 has the more conventional diver’s setup: Vaer lists 20 ATM water resistance, a rotating 120-click bezel, a date display and an automatic Miyota 9015 movement. Its 39mm case measures 46mm lug-to-lug, 11.9mm high (12.5mm including the crystal) and 70.6g, according to the product page. Vaer recommends the size for wrists around 6.5 to 8.5 inches.
Those specifications make the D5 the more diving-oriented option on paper, but they do not establish suitability for a particular dive. A watch’s condition and correct operation matter, and Vaer’s published rating should not be treated as a substitute for activity-specific guidance or inspection.

What the D5’s movement specification means
The Miyota 9015 is automatic, so it winds through wrist movement and can also be wound manually. Vaer specifies a 42-hour power reserve and a timing tolerance of -5/+10 seconds per day. These are manufacturer specifications, not a result of independent accuracy testing.
What the R1 Tactical chronograph does
The R1 uses a Seiko VK-63 meca-quartz movement. It keeps time with quartz regulation while giving the chronograph a mechanical-feeling operation. Vaer’s guide describes the upper pusher at 2 o’clock as the stopwatch start/stop control and the lower pusher at 4 o’clock as reset.

- The large central hand is the chronograph hand.
- The center subdial at 6 o’clock shows running seconds.
- The subdial at 3 o’clock displays 24-hour time.
- The subdial at 9 o’clock records chronograph minutes, up to 60.
Vaer also describes fixed steel guards around the pushers. They offer protection, but they do not screw down. The R1 has a screw-down crown and case back; Vaer instructs owners to secure the crown before water exposure and warns against water or steam exposure while it is unsecured.

Choose the D5 Pacific if
- You want an automatic watch with a dive-watch layout, including a rotating bezel and date.
- You prefer the higher stated water-resistance rating of the two.
- The 39mm case and Vaer’s stated wrist-size guidance suit your fit preference.
Choose the R1 Tactical if
- You expect to use a stopwatch chronograph and its 24-hour subdial.
- You prefer field-watch styling and a meca-quartz movement over an automatic diver.
- You are comfortable with its lower stated water-resistance rating and the crown precautions in Vaer’s guide.
Both watches have interchangeable 20mm straps. For the R1, Vaer describes FKM rubber as the standard strap and says not to submerge the leather option.

Vaer’s D5 Pacific Anacapa product page listed the watch at $749 and showed it as sold out when accessed in 2026. That is a time-sensitive listing, not a guarantee of current price or availability. The official sources cited here do not establish a current R1 Tactical price or stock status, so check Vaer’s listing for the exact reference before buying.
