The Vario 1945 A-11S is a solar-quartz field watch offered in 35 mm and 40 mm case sizes. The practical choice comes down mainly to fit: the smaller version has a 41 mm lug-to-lug span and an 18 mm strap width, while the larger measures 48 mm lug to lug and takes a 20 mm strap. Vario gives the two sizes different Miyota movements and presents the design as a peace-oriented reinterpretation of the World War II-era Type A-11.
What is the Vario 1945 A-11S?
It is a modern solar-quartz field watch from Vario, with a dial and design language the brand says are inspired by the American-designed Type A-11. Vario frames the watch as a reminder of peace. That is the maker’s interpretation; the specifications and historical framing here are drawn from Vario’s own product and story pages, not an independent examination of original A-11 watches.
The A-11S is offered in two case sizes. Both versions share the listed crystal, case material, lume, crown style, and water-resistance rating, but differ in dimensions and movement model.
35 mm or 40 mm: what changes?
Vario lists a five-millimeter difference in case diameter, along with changes to thickness, lug-to-lug length, lug width, and movement. The smaller version is shorter across the wrist and uses a narrower strap; the larger version has a longer footprint and wider strap.

These are manufacturer-listed dimensions and movement models, not independently measured values. For replacement straps, match the lug width to the chosen size—18 mm for the 35 mm case or 20 mm for the 40 mm case—and confirm attachment compatibility before buying.

Vario lists these features for both versions:
- Sapphire crystal with an inner anti-reflective coating
- 316L stainless-steel case
- BGW9 lume
- Push-pull crown
- 5 ATM water resistance
The 5 ATM rating is the maker’s stated specification; it should not be treated as a guarantee for every water activity. Vario also describes its crown as positioned at 4 o’clock and designed for grip without digging into the wearer’s wrist.

Solar charging and storage
Vario identifies both movements as solar quartz and advises owners not to leave the watch stored in a dark place. Its story page says a full charge provides four months of operation and estimates about 25 hours of charging under strong sun or 60 hours on a cloudy day. Those are Vario’s operating examples, not results from an independent charging or runtime test; actual charging conditions can vary.
Why Vario calls it a peace-oriented A-11
Vario says the A-11S takes inspiration from the Type A-11 but changes the central seconds display: rather than a conventional center seconds hand, the brand describes a disc and contrasting dot. It interprets that design choice as a move away from tools of war and connects the watch to a message of peace, including a reference to Sadako Sasaki’s hope for a peaceful future.

The available information does not independently establish the history or detailed design specifications of original A-11 watches, so the connection is best understood as Vario’s inspiration rather than a verified historical account.

When Vario’s product page was checked for this article, it displayed a price of US$218 and a two-year international warranty. The page also listed free worldwide mail shipping, while warning that duties and taxes may be payable depending on destination. For US customers, it gave an estimated USPS delivery time of two to three weeks. Vario’s collection page displayed a 14-day return policy and noted a US-order surcharge related to tariff changes.
