What the Versa 4 can do with text messages
The Versa 4 can mirror calls, texts, calendar alerts, email, and app notifications from your phone. For texts, it can show the sender, a message preview, and a vibration alert. Recent notifications remain available on the watch until they are cleared or replaced.
This is not standalone texting. The Versa 4 has no independent cellular SMS service in this setup. Your phone must be nearby—Google recommends approximately 30 feet— with Bluetooth enabled and the Google Health app allowed to run in the background. Notification behavior can also depend on your phone model, operating-system version, messaging app, and privacy settings. See Google’s notification requirements.

Android versus iPhone: the important difference

The practical rule is simple: receiving text notifications works on both platforms, but replying from the Versa 4 is primarily an Android feature. Google says iPhone-connected devices can respond to Google Health app notifications, while Android supports the broader quick-reply system for apps whose notifications expose a direct reply action. That does not mean every Android messaging app will offer replies.
For supported Android notifications, examples may include text messaging, Facebook Messenger, X, and Line. WhatsApp and other apps depend on whether the app and phone expose a compatible reply control.

Requirements before setup
- The Versa 4 is paired with the correct phone.
- Bluetooth is enabled and the phone is close to the watch.
- The Google Health app is installed, signed in, updated, and permitted to run in the background.
- The phone itself receives notifications from the messaging app.
- Notifications are allowed when the phone is locked.
- Do Not Disturb, Focus, driving mode, and quiet hours are disabled while testing.
- Do Not Disturb and Sleep Mode are disabled on the Versa 4.
- The watch and phone software are up to date.
Older guides may tell you to use the Fitbit app. Google’s current support pages refer to the Google Health app, although labels and navigation can vary by installed app version.
How to turn on text notifications
Android
- Open the Google Health app.
- Tap Connections at the top left.
- Select Versa 4.
- Tap Notifications.
- Choose the app used for Text messages.
- Tap App Notifications to enable additional messaging apps such as WhatsApp or Messenger.
- Accept any notification-access or permission prompts.
- Sync the watch.
Android phone menus differ by manufacturer. Background controls may appear under Settings > Apps, Notifications, or Battery. Make sure battery optimization is not suspending Google Health.

iPhone
- Update the Google Health app, iOS, and Versa 4 software.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the information button beside the Versa 4.
- Turn on Share System Notifications.
- Go to Settings > Notifications and enable notifications for Messages and any desired messaging apps.
- Enable Notification Center access for those apps.
- Set Show Previews to Always or When Unlocked if the watch shows an alert without the message body.
- Reopen Google Health and sync the watch.
If iOS hides previews, the Versa 4 may show only the app name or sender rather than the text itself. The relevant iPhone notification guidance covers these settings.
How to read and manage texts on the Versa 4
- Start at the clock face.
- Swipe down to open notifications.
- Tap the text notification to expand it.
- Tap or scroll to view more of a longer message.
- Use the back button or swipe away to exit.
- Clear the individual notification, or clear all notifications when appropriate.
The watch stores notifications, not a complete independent message history. Clearing a notification on the watch can also remove it from the phone’s notification center; clearing it on the phone may remove it from the watch as well.

How to reply on Android
When the app and notification support replies, open the message and choose one of these controls:
- Text icon: select a predefined quick reply.
- Emoji icon: send an emoji.
- Microphone: dictate a voice-to-text response.
For voice replies, speak clearly and review the transcription if the interface offers that option before tapping Send. Voice recognition can misread names, punctuation, uncommon words, or accents, so retry an incorrect transcription rather than assuming the intended message was sent. The Versa 4 microphone setting must be enabled for this feature.
If there is no reply button, that may be expected. Common reasons include iPhone pairing, an app that does not expose a direct Android notification reply, a notification type that is not reply-enabled, a disconnected phone, disabled microphone access, or a notification that has already been cleared.

Customize quick replies
Quick replies are automatically available for supported apps. On the watch, open the notification settings, choose Quick replies, select the app, and replace the available responses with your own text. Sync the Versa 4 after saving.

- “I’m driving—will reply later.”
- “On my way.”
- “Can’t talk right now.”
- “Yes, that works.”
- “Please call me.”

Quick replies are not a replacement for a full smartwatch keyboard. The practical input methods are preset or custom short responses, emojis, and voice dictation where supported.
Which apps can appear on the watch?
You can mirror notifications from Apple Messages, Android messaging apps, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, X, Line, email, calendar apps, and other apps that generate ordinary phone notifications. Enable them under App Notifications in Google Health.
Receiving an app notification and replying to it are separate capabilities. On Android, replies are most likely when the app provides a direct reply action in its phone notification. On iPhone, ordinary third-party messaging replies are much more restricted.

Why text notifications are missing
No notifications at all
- Confirm Bluetooth is on and the watch is within roughly 30 feet.
- Check that the phone receives the notifications itself.
- Confirm Google Health has notification access and background permission.
- Turn off phone and watch Do Not Disturb, Focus, Sleep, driving, and quiet-hours modes.
- Make sure the Versa 4 is not locked.
- Check whether another Bluetooth connection is interfering.
Calls arrive, but texts do not
Check the selected text-message app specifically. Google Health allows one primary app for the text-message category, so selecting the wrong messaging app can block the texts you expect. Also check whether the conversation is already open on the phone: Google notes that a conversation being viewed on the phone may not produce a new watch notification.
The watch vibrates but shows no message content
On iPhone, check Settings > Notifications, Show Previews, Allow Notifications, and Notification Center. On Android, review the messaging app’s lock-screen and preview settings. A phone can deliver an alert while deliberately hiding its contents.
Notifications are delayed
Move the phone closer, confirm Bluetooth has not disconnected, and check that Google Health is not restricted by battery optimization. Syncing, a focus mode, competing Bluetooth devices, or a recent app update can also interrupt or delay mirrored notifications.
Only some messaging apps are missing
Verify that the specific app is enabled under App Notifications and that the app is allowed to notify on the phone. Do not assume that enabling the text-message category automatically enables WhatsApp, Messenger, or every other app.

First identify the phone platform. iPhone users should not expect Android-style replies in ordinary third-party messaging notifications. On Android, confirm that the app’s notification includes a direct reply action, the phone is nearby, Bluetooth is connected, and the notification has not been cleared. For voice replies, enable the Versa 4 microphone setting.

Notifications stopped after changing phones
The new phone may not have notification access or Bluetooth permissions authorized. Recheck the setup path, remove the old watch connection if necessary, and pair the Versa 4 with the correct phone before enabling notifications again.
Recovery sequence when settings look correct
Use this low-risk escalation order before considering a factory reset:
- Force-quit Google Health.
- Reopen it and sync the Versa 4.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it on again.
- Restart the Versa 4.
- Restart the phone.
- In Google Health, turn notifications off.
- Restart the phone once more.
- Turn notifications back on and sync.
- On iPhone, toggle Share System Notifications off and on.
- If the problem remains, forget the Versa 4 in the phone’s Bluetooth settings and set up notifications again.
A factory reset is disruptive and should not be the first response to a notification-permission or Bluetooth problem. Follow Google’s current notification troubleshooting steps before using more destructive remedies.
Language and character limitations
Messages using non-Latin alphabets, including some Cyrillic or Arabic text, may not display correctly. On Android, Google Health includes an Enable Transliteration option intended to convert unsupported characters into approximate Latin equivalents. This is a character workaround, not translation: it does not convert the message’s meaning into another language, and accuracy is not guaranteed.
Privacy and notification overload
Message previews on your wrist can be convenient but visible to anyone looking at the watch. Review iPhone Show Previews or Android lock-screen notification privacy if texts contain sensitive information. You can also enable only Messages and disable unnecessary apps, which reduces interruptions and keeps the notification inbox usable.
Remember that clearing a notification on the Versa 4 can also clear it from the phone’s notification center. That is useful for tidying up, but it is not the same as deleting the message from the messaging app.
Is the Versa 4 good for texting?
- Good fit: you want glanceable incoming alerts and your phone stays nearby.
- Reasonable fit: you use Android and mostly need short replies, emojis, or occasional dictation.
- Limited fit: you use an iPhone and expect robust replies to WhatsApp or other third-party chats.
- Poor fit: you need texts to work away from your phone, a full keyboard, long-form replies, or complete standalone messaging apps.
The Versa 4 works best as a phone-connected notification mirror. Its Android reply tools make short responses practical, but iPhone users and anyone seeking independent texting should choose a more capable smartwatch category.
