Video: The Ulysse Nardin Freak, the Watch That Broke All Conventions

The Ulysse Nardin Freak made its movement the display. See how the original told time without conventional hands or a crown—and how the family evolved.

Introduced in 2001, the Ulysse Nardin Freak turned the usual watchmaking formula inside out: its movement became the display, with rotating components indicating the time instead of conventional hands. The original had no traditional dial or crown, and its bezel was used to set the time. It also helped bring silicon escapement wheels into mechanical watchmaking, a milestone attributed to the brand and the Fondation Haute Horlogerie.

How does the Ulysse Nardin Freak tell time without hands?

The original Freak makes its movement architecture visible beneath sapphire and uses that moving architecture to show the time. Ulysse Nardin describes the barrel rotating once every 12 hours and a bridge carrying the gear train moving around the case once per hour. That bridge supplies the minute indication; the rotating hour element indicates the hours. The effect is less like reading a conventional dial and more like watching the mechanism travel around the watch.

The bezel is rotated to set the time. Winding is handled through the caseback, so “no crown” does not mean there is no way to adjust or wind the watch. The Fondation Haute Horlogerie describes the original’s two arrow-tipped bridges and notes that the case interacts with the movement to perform the role normally associated with a crown.

What made the original Freak unconventional?

The movement replaced the familiar display

Ulysse Nardin’s official collection history describes the concept as “NO DIAL, NO HANDS, NO CROWN.” That phrase captures the original Freak’s visual idea: rather than placing hands over a separate dial, the watch exposes the movement and makes its rotating elements the indicators.

Silicon brought a new material into the escapement

The original Freak used silicon escapement wheels. Ulysse Nardin and the Fondation Haute Horlogerie describe it as the first mechanical watch to use a silicon escapement; that priority claim is theirs. Silicon is a material used in the escapement, not a description of the entire movement or watch.

The launch is associated with Ulysse Nardin’s Rolf Schnyder and watchmaker Ludwig Oechslin. In the brand’s history, Schnyder is quoted: “When I saw silicon and understood its true potential in watchmaking, I knew that this was our opportunity.”

How did the Freak evolve after 2001?

The Freak is a family of experiments rather than one unchanged design. Later versions added new materials, complications and more familiar controls, while some retained the original’s stripped-back display concept.

Year Model or development What changed
2007 Freak DIAMonSIL Introduced diamond-coated silicon.
2010 Freak Diavolo Added a flying carousel tourbillon.
2018 Freak Vision Introduced automatic winding to the collection.
2019 Freak X Brought back a crown for winding and setting.
2022 Freak S Extended the family with a new model.
2023 Freak ONE Returned to the no-dial, no-hands, no-crown formula; Ulysse Nardin states a 90-hour power reserve.

The milestones reflect the collection’s central tension: it can preserve a radical movement-led display or selectively adopt features—such as automatic winding or a crown—that make the watch more conventional to use.

Those figures describe the reported 2026 model, not the 2001 original. The model’s crown is part of the Freak X line’s more conventional approach to winding and setting.
