In the 2018 feature, collectors Fred (@watchfred) and Rene (@rene_jk) discuss models from the 1930s through the 1970s, explain the details they cross-check, and warn that an appealing watch is not necessarily an original one. Their observations are informed opinions, not an official authentication service or a current market guide.
What the interviews cover
The feature is not limited to one celebrated model. It maps a vintage Breitling collection across aviation, diving, timing and calculation, and general chronograph designs. Its examples include the Navitimer and Cosmonaute, AVI/Co-Pilot, Chronomat, Top Time, SuperOcean, Datora, Premier, Unitime, Sprint, and Chrono-Matic.
That range matters: the watches were made for different purposes and can differ in movement, configuration, dial, bezel, and period-correct components. The interview is a useful orientation to the families, not a complete catalogue or a claim that every named model is equally documented or readily available today.
What Fred and Rene say they collect
The feature portrays Fred as focused on chronographs, while Rene is especially drawn to 1950s and 1960s Navitimers as well as other vintage models. Their preferences—and their differing impressions of which watches are overlooked or sought after—are personal views recorded in 2018. They should not be treated as current buying advice, price guidance, or a forecast of what will appreciate.

One historical claim in the interview should also remain attributed rather than treated as independently established. Fred says, “Breitling has been a leading innovator in that field, have helped define how chronographs look and function until today, launched the first wrist chronograph with a pusher at 2:00 in 1915, presented the first dual pusher wrist chronograph with pushers at 2:00 and 4:00 in 1933, and applied for the patent for the first ‘Smart Watch’ chronograph in 1940.” That is Fred’s account in the interview, not a claim verified here against primary historical records.
How the interviewees approach originality
Fred and Rene describe vintage Breitling as a category where fakes, altered watches, and watches assembled from parts of different examples can complicate evaluation. They recommend comparing several details rather than relying on one striking feature. Their reported checks include:
Rank #2
- Polished Stainless Steel Case and Bracelet, Case Diameter: 44mm
- Blue Dial with Index Hour Markers
- Breitling Caliber B20
- Self-winding Automatic Movement, COSC Chronometer Certified
- 200 Meters / 660 Feet Water-Resistant
- Reference and serial numbers: Check whether the case markings make sense for the model and period.
- Movement: Compare its markings and configuration with what is expected for the reference.
- Dial and bezel: Look at the specific variant and whether its details fit the watch’s period.
- Other components: Consider whether hands and other parts appear period-correct and consistent with the rest of the watch.
- Supporting material: Use period catalogs and advertisements as cross-checks where available.
These are investigative clues, not standalone proof. A matching serial number or plausible-looking dial cannot by itself establish that a watch is authentic or that all its parts are original. The interview also notes that servicing may change components; its concern about replacement parts is not evidence that every modern Breitling service changes original parts or that a particular current service policy applies.
What to do before buying a specific watch
- Identify the exact watch. Record the model or reference, case serial, movement markings, and visible dial and bezel details. Keep the description specific: broad family names alone may cover different configurations.
- Compare the details together. Look for consistency among the case, movement, dial, bezel, and other components, and compare them with credible period material when possible. Treat unexplained mismatches as questions to resolve, not as proof of fraud.
- Seek another informed view. Fred and Rene recommend asking knowledgeable collector communities for a second opinion. Such discussion can help identify questions or inconsistencies, but informal feedback is not an official certificate or guarantee.
- Assess the evidence as well as the watch. Ask what documentation supports the seller’s description and whether any replaced or uncertain parts have been disclosed. The 2018 feature does not provide a method for determining a fair current price, so it cannot settle whether a particular asking price is reasonable.
Records, books, and the limits of an online opinion
Rene says in the interview that, in his account, records from the original company did not pass to later owners and that there was no official archive from which to request an extract for an individual vintage watch. This is a statement from the 2018 feature, not a verified description of current policy. The article does not establish a current official route to authenticate a vintage Breitling.

The interview names Benno Richter’s Breitling book as a potentially useful reference for model and serial-number information, while warning that it is outdated and has errors and omissions. Use it as one reference point rather than definitive authority. Similarly, a collector’s online opinion can inform further checks but cannot substitute for documentary evidence or a qualified assessment of the actual watch.

The article preserves collectors’ impressions of the market as it appeared to them in 2018. Those comments are time-bound opinions, not a current assessment of availability or value. It supplies no comparable current prices, condition grades, or live listings, so it cannot support a ranking of these models by present-day value.

It also includes conversational estimates, including a disputed personal belief about early Navitimer production. That estimate is not established production data. Likewise, the interview’s unsubstantiated conversational estimate about the share of watches that may be fake or incorrect should not be read as a measured prevalence rate.
