Why the Omega Megaquartz Marine Chronometer is unusual
The Marine Chronometer belongs to Omega’s high-frequency quartz chapter. Omega’s historical account places its certification in 1974, and the company’s Japanese chronology also lists the certification that year. The label “marine chronometer” signals the model’s precision-focused identity; it should not be taken as proof that every surviving example retains its original performance.
Omega’s Taiwan history page describes the watch as having a daily deviation of less than 0.002 seconds per day, a figure Omega associates with the 1974 watch. This is the manufacturer’s historical statement, not an independently verified statistical result or a specification established for all examples today. Caliber names collectors will encounter
A specialist collector reference associates the Marine Chronometer wristwatch line with calibers 1511 and 1516. These names are useful starting points when identifying an example, but they do not by themselves establish that a specific watch is authentic, complete, or correctly represented. What the museum record does—and does not—show
The Science Museum Group catalogs an “Omega Megaquartz 2400 Marine Chronometer” as object 1975-13. Its collection entry lists stainless steel, brass, and glass. The record’s “overall” measurements are 13 mm × 256 mm × 31 mm; because they do not read like wristwatch case dimensions, they should be treated as the catalog’s measurements for that object, not reinterpreted as the case size of a wristwatch variant.
The catalog is evidence that the museum holds an object identified as a Megaquartz 2400 Marine Chronometer. It does not establish the exact case dimensions, configuration, or condition of every wristwatch example. Consult the Science Museum Group collection record for the object’s catalog details.

How to assess a vintage example
Historical significance does not settle the condition or authenticity of an individual watch. When comparing actual examples, separate what can be documented from what a seller asserts. These are practical inspection points, not a grading standard supplied by the cited sources.
Check the reference and caliber
- Ask for clear movement and case-reference documentation and compare the stated caliber with the 1511 or 1516 names reported for the line.
- Do not treat a caliber label or seller description alone as authentication; seek an assessment from a watchmaker familiar with vintage electronic quartz watches if the evidence is incomplete.
Assess originality and condition
- Compare the dial, hands, case, and bracelet for originality and condition. Request detailed photographs and note any replaced, refinished, or missing parts.
- Do not infer dimensions from the museum’s “overall” measurement entry; obtain measurements for the actual watch being considered.
Establish whether it runs and what service it has had
- Ask whether the watch is currently operating and request recent service documentation, including the work performed and its date.
- A running example is not thereby proven to meet Omega’s historical daily-deviation figure. No accuracy measurement for the specimen is established without a current test.
Separate provenance from assertions
- Record whether box, papers, or other provenance documents are included, and distinguish verifiable documents from a seller’s account.
- The cited sources do not establish current prices, a dependable price range, live stock, service costs, or parts availability. Any value judgment needs dated comparable sales and a condition-specific assessment.
