The Vulcain Grand Prix Champagne is a time-only automatic with a champagne sunburst dial, a manufacturer-listed 39 mm steel case and a stated 40-hour power reserve. Vulcain currently lists it at CHF 1,190. In a hands-on review dated April 21, 2024, Fratello’s Balazs Ferenczi described the watch as elegant and wearable, but measured its case at about 38 mm—an individual measurement that makes trying it on worthwhile if case size is decisive for you.
What the Vulcain Grand Prix Champagne offers
Vulcain’s official listing describes a restrained, time-only design: hours, minutes and central seconds, without a date display. Its domed, semi-gloss champagne sunburst dial is paired with polished silver hands and a polished 316L stainless-steel case and caseback. A double-domed sapphire crystal has anti-reflective treatment.
The champagne dial is one of the Grand Prix range’s color options; Vulcain also refers to silver and black versions. The finish gives the Champagne variant a warmer, more distinctive look than a conventional silver dial, while keeping the display simple. That is a description of the listed design, not a claim about how the dial appears under every lighting condition.

Price and tax treatment are region- and time-sensitive; check the official Vulcain Grand Prix Champagne listing for the price and terms shown for your location at purchase. Fratello’s April 2024 review gave CHF 1,190–1,470 for configurations at that time; that older range should not be read as a current price list.

How it wears: listed size versus one reviewer’s measurement
Vulcain lists the case at 39 mm, 12.7 mm thick. Fratello’s specification block gives a 45.4 mm lug-to-lug measurement for the reviewed watch. In his April 21, 2024 hands-on article, Ferenczi reported measuring the case with calipers and finding it “more like 38mm.” That is his measurement of the review sample, not a replacement for Vulcain’s published size or a guarantee that every example will measure the same.
Diameter alone cannot settle fit: lug-to-lug span, thickness, wrist shape and personal preference all matter. If you are choosing between a compact fit and a more prominent one, try the watch on if possible, or compare the 45.4 mm lug-to-lug and 12.7 mm thickness with a watch you already wear comfortably.

Ferenczi wrote that he spent a few weeks with the watch and found it elegant and usable; he also said he grew attached to it and did not want to take it off when the test period ended. Those are his personal impressions, rather than a universal prediction about how the watch will feel or look to another wearer. His review identifies the tested piece as reference 670171A70.BAL228; the current official listing gives SKU 670171A70.BAN249. The sources do not establish why those identifiers differ, so confirm the exact reference and strap configuration with the seller.
Movement, reserve and water resistance
Vulcain identifies the movement as a Landeron L24 automatic and states a 40-hour power reserve. It publishes a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz). Fratello’s review specification block instead gives 28,000 vibrations per hour for its reviewed watch, while also reporting an approximately 40-hour reserve. The available listings therefore disagree on frequency; use Vulcain’s figure as the current official product specification, and ask the seller or manufacturer to clarify if that detail matters to your purchase. Neither source supplies independent timing-accuracy results.

The listed 5 ATM rating is a water-resistance specification, not activity-specific swimming guidance. The available product information does not establish that Vulcain recommends swimming with this watch. For swimming or any other water activity, seek the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact watch and ensure its water resistance is suitable; do not infer an activity promise from the rating alone.

The core choice is visual: the champagne version has a warmer dial tone, while silver and black provide more conventional alternatives. The sources do not establish differences in performance among the dial colors.

Vulcain’s current Champagne listing names brown or black alligator-print calfskin straps. Ferenczi described a wider set of strap choices during the 2024 review period, including gray leather, black rubber and genuine alligator; those are historical options, not confirmation of current stock. Check the exact configuration before ordering. Ferenczi gives the pictured strap as 20/16 mm, but strap variants may affect the reference; verify lug width and buckle width for your specific watch before buying a replacement.
Who should consider this Grand Prix?
- Consider it if you want a simple automatic with a distinctive champagne dial, sapphire crystal and a traditional three-hand display, and the listed price and dimensions work for you.
- Try it on first if you are particular about how a 39 mm case sits on your wrist. The reviewer’s roughly 38 mm measurement is useful context, but does not establish universal fit.
- Confirm before purchase if a particular strap, reference number, water activity or movement frequency is important. The official listing and the 2024 review differ on identifiers and reported frequency, and current availability of review-era strap choices is not established.
- Do not buy on an accuracy claim alone: the sources provide manufacturer specifications and one reviewer’s experience, but no independent timing test.
