Wareable’s Hot List: 24 wearables innovations for 2024 was published on February 19, 2024 as a watchlist rather than a shopping guide. It named the products, companies, executives and health technologies most likely to shape the year in smartwatches and connected wearables.
Some predictions became real products. Others remained research projects, rumors or broad industry themes. The most useful way to read the list now is as a snapshot of where wearable technology was heading—and a record of which bets actually reached consumers.
What the Wareable Hot List was—and was not
The list was not a ranking of the 24 best watches released in 2024. It was also not a promise that every item would launch that year. Wareable described it as a guide to people, products and developments worth watching, with the complete list originally available through PULSE by Wareable.
The first ten entries were publicly displayed, while the full list contained 24 subjects. Several entries referred to specific watches, such as Apple Watch X or Galaxy Ring. Others covered software platforms, sensor research, health features, business initiatives and interface ideas.

What actually happened after the list was published?
Apple Watch X became Apple Watch Series 10
Apple never released a product called Apple Watch X. That name was a 2024 rumor label, apparently linked to speculation about a significant anniversary redesign.
On September 9, 2024, Apple announced the Apple Watch Series 10, which became available on September 20. It introduced a thinner case, faster charging, water-depth and temperature sensing, and sleep-apnea notifications when used with compatible hardware and software. The outcome matched some of the Hot List’s direction, but not its rumored product name.
Sleep-apnea notifications should not be confused with a general diagnosis. They are a health feature designed to identify signs that may warrant medical attention, and availability depends on region, device compatibility and regulatory authorization.
Galaxy Ring made smart rings a mainstream category
Samsung launched the Galaxy Ring in July 2024. Its titanium construction, sleep tracking, Sleep Insights and claimed battery life of up to seven days gave smart rings a much higher profile than they had enjoyed as niche fitness accessories.

Its arrival also made the category more relevant to smartwatch buyers: a ring can collect sleep and recovery data without putting another screen on the wrist, while a Galaxy Watch handles notifications, workouts and live metrics.
Wear OS 5 shipped
Google’s Wear OS 5 was not merely a roadmap item. Google announced improvements including additional running metrics and lower power consumption. Google said an outdoor marathon scenario could use up to 20% less power than Wear OS 4.
That matters more than a version number. Battery life remains one of the clearest differences between a smartwatch and a traditional watch, so efficiency improvements can affect daily usability more than a new watch face or menu redesign.

Health Connect moved beyond beta status
Wareable’s original discussion treated Google Health Connect as technically in beta. That description is now outdated. Health Connect is Android’s health-data platform, and on Android 14 and later it is integrated into the operating system. Android 13 and earlier use the Google Play Store version.

On Android 14 or later, common routes to the controls include:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security & Privacy.
- Open Privacy.
- Select Health Connect.
Depending on the Android build, it may also be available through Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Privacy dashboard > See other permissions > Health Connect, or through Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager > Health Connect.
There are practical limits. Health Connect requires Android 9/API level 28 or later with Google Play services, is Android-only and is not supported on work profiles. It is best understood as a controlled data-sharing layer, not a universal cloud database that makes every watch compatible with every phone.
The health features were promising, not universally ready
Blood pressure
Blood-pressure tracking was one of the list’s most important themes, but it required careful qualification. Samsung’s approach depended on calibration with a conventional cuff and, in the relevant implementation, a Samsung phone. That is very different from claiming that a watch can independently replace a medical blood-pressure cuff.
Recommended Free Tools
Regulatory clearance, calibration drift, skin contact, device placement and individual physiology all affect the usefulness of cuffless estimates. Buyers should treat a watch-based reading as a potential trend or screening aid only when the manufacturer and local regulator support that use.
Sleep apnea
Sleep-apnea detection moved closer to consumer availability in 2024. Apple introduced sleep-apnea notifications with the Series 10 generation and watchOS 11, while Samsung’s feature became a regulatory-cleared function tied to compatible Galaxy Watch hardware, Samsung Health Monitor software and supported markets.

It is not a general-purpose medical diagnosis, and it is not the same as blood-pressure measurement. Users who receive an alert should discuss it with a healthcare professional rather than treating the watch as a substitute for clinical testing.
Metabolic health, sweat and hydration
Glucose-related wearables, sweat analysis and hydration estimates all address a real weakness in conventional fitness watches: heart rate and movement are relatively easy to measure continuously, while fuel use, fluid balance and metabolic response are much harder.
The difficulty is not simply adding another sensor. Sweat composition varies between people and across body locations; hydration needs depend on temperature, intensity, clothing and acclimatization; and consumer glucose products may have different intended uses and regulatory statuses. These categories were rightly on a watchlist, but they were not established as universal smartwatch features.
HRV, stress and mental-health tracking
Daytime heart-rate variability can add context to recovery and stress tracking, but HRV is sensitive to posture, breathing, activity, illness, alcohol, sleep and measurement method. A single number should not be treated as a definitive stress or mental-health score.
The mental-health and brain-tracking entry was even more speculative. Research, patents and EEG-related devices may eventually support useful applications, but the Hot List did not establish that consumer wearables could clinically diagnose depression, anxiety or other mental-health conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the non-product entries matter to watch buyers
Several entries focused on infrastructure rather than a watch you could buy. Garmin Health and Powered by Polar point to a growing business in which established fitness companies license sensors, algorithms and analysis to other brands. The visible product may carry a different logo while relying on familiar underlying technology.
AI was another layer rather than a single feature. The list mentioned Apple AI leadership, Samsung Health and possible coaching tools. At the time, much of this was forward-looking reporting rather than confirmed specification. AI can summarize trends or personalize suggestions, but it does not automatically make the underlying sensor data more accurate.

You could check those real-time health metrics anytime, anywhere on your wrist and view the data record in the App. The heart rate monitor watch also tracks different sleep stages for light and deep sleep, and the time when you wake up, helps you to get a better understanding of your sleep quality.
- 【120+ exercise modes & All-Day Activity Tracking】There are more than 120 exercise modes available in the activity trackers and smartwatches, covering almost all daily sports activities you can imagine, gives you new ways to train and advanced metrics for more information about your workout performance. The all-day activity tracking feature monitors your steps, distance, and calories burned all the day, so you can see how much progress you've made towards your fitness goals.
- 【Messages & Incoming Calls Notification】With this smart watch fitness trackers for iPhone and android phones, you can receive notifications for incoming calls and read messages directly from your wrist without taking out your phone. Never miss a beat, stay in touch with loved ones, and stay informed of important updates wherever you are.
- 【Essential Assistant for Daily Life】The fitness watches for women and men provide you with more features including drinking water and sedentary reminder, women's menstrual period reminder, breath training, real-time weather display, remote camera shooting, music control, timer, stopwatch, finding phone, alarm clock, making it a considerate life assistant. With the GPS connectivity, you could get a map of your workout route in the app for outdoor activity by connecting to your phone GPS.
Gestures, hearables and AR upstarts broadened the definition of a wearable. A smartwatch may become a controller for glasses or earbuds; earbuds may gain hearing and health functions; and gesture input may reduce the need to touch a tiny screen during exercise. Sustainability was similarly practical: battery replacement, software support, repairability and the ability to keep using a watch after a phone upgrade are all more meaningful than a recycled-materials claim alone.
How to use the Hot List when choosing a watch
- Separate shipped features from watchlist ideas. Series 10, Galaxy Ring and Wear OS 5 became real products or platforms. Brain tracking, hydration sensing and advanced blood-pressure measurement remained more conditional.
- Check the exact hardware. Health features may require a particular watch generation, phone brand, software version or sensor package.
- Check your market. Regulatory approval and feature availability differ by country. A feature shown in a launch presentation may not be enabled where you live.
- Read the measurement limitations. “Tracks,” “estimates,” “notifies” and “diagnoses” are not interchangeable terms.
- Prioritize the everyday basics. Battery life, comfort, GPS reliability, notification support, app quality and phone compatibility still determine whether a watch is useful.
- Look at the ecosystem. Apple Watch is tightly linked to iPhone, Galaxy features are strongest with Samsung phones, and Health Connect helps Android apps share data but does not eliminate compatibility gaps.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can a smartwatch diagnose sleep apnea or measure blood pressure accurately?
Not in the broad sense. Compatible watches may provide regulated sleep-apnea notifications or blood-pressure estimates in supported markets, but these features have hardware, calibration and regulatory limits and should not replace clinical evaluation.
What is Google Health Connect used for?
Health Connect is Android’s permission-controlled framework for sharing health and fitness data between compatible apps. On Android 14 and later it is integrated into system settings; it requires Android 9 or later with Google Play services and does not support work profiles.
The Bottom Line
Wareable’s 2024 Hot List was most valuable as a map of wearable technology’s direction, not as a catalog of guaranteed launches. Its strongest calls included smart rings, Wear OS 5, sleep-related monitoring and the growing importance of shared health-data platforms. Its more ambitious ideas—cuffless blood pressure, hydration sensing, metabolic tracking and consumer brain monitoring—needed, and still need, careful scrutiny.
For watch shoppers, the lesson is straightforward: distinguish a shipping feature from a research trend, check phone and regional compatibility, and treat health insights as measurements with limitations rather than medical verdicts.
