Ceramic watch cases are highly resistant to everyday scratching, but they are not unbreakable: a hard impact or fall can chip or fracture them. “Ceramic” also covers different formulations and case constructions, so the exact model matters as much as the material label.
What does “ceramic” mean in a watch case?
Watchmaking ceramic is an inorganic, non-metallic material consolidated through high-temperature firing or sintering. It is not one universal recipe. Manufacturers may use zirconia-based ceramics, other ceramic chemistries, or named composites, and their descriptions apply to their own materials and models.
For example, Rado describes high-tech ceramic made from high-purity powdered starting materials. IWC describes mixing auxiliary materials, shaping the material, then sintering it; one IWC case example uses silicon nitride ceramic. CHANEL identifies zirconium dioxide powder and yttrium in its high-tech ceramic. Rado’s Ceramos is a distinct material that the brand describes as combining ceramic hardness with metal-alloy characteristics. These labels should not be treated as interchangeable.
Why choose a ceramic case?
Resistance to everyday scratches
Scratch resistance is ceramic’s clearest practical advantage. Rado describes its high-tech ceramic as highly scratch-resistant, with an everyday-use qualification; Certina says its ceramic elements are scratch-resistant and retain their color and shine. These are manufacturer claims, not guarantees against every material or accident. “Scratch-resistant” does not mean scratch-proof.

Rado gives approximate hardness figures of 1,250 Vickers for its high-tech ceramic and 1,750 Vickers for Ceramos, compared with 10,000 Vickers for natural diamond. These are Rado’s material figures, not independent universal values for all ceramics. Hardness is not impact toughness, so the figures do not show how well a case withstands a fall.
Color, weight, and feel
Some makers also emphasize color retention, lightness, or how ceramic feels against the skin. Those qualities depend on the material, finish, and complete case construction; they should be checked against the specific watch rather than assumed for every ceramic case.

What happens if a ceramic case takes a hard hit?
A ceramic case can chip or break under a strong shock or after falling onto a hard surface. Citizen warns of this risk in its care guidance, and Rado states, “Our watches are hard but not indestructible.” The American Ceramic Society identifies brittleness as a major disadvantage of ceramics. The key distinction is that hardness helps resist surface scratching, while impact toughness concerns resistance to cracking or fracture.
If a ceramic component breaks, it may need to be replaced rather than refinished in the way some metal cases can be. The American Ceramic Society notes that a damaged ceramic watch part may require complete replacement. The exact remedy depends on the model, the damaged component, and the manufacturer’s service policy.

- Multi-color optional: a variety of bright colors can be selected to meet different styles, which is an ideal choice for watch lovers, fans of joint series and trendsetters, and is suitable for birthdays, festivals or special occasions.
How is ceramic made, and what do the milestones mean?
Ceramic watch components require specialized forming and high-temperature processing. IWC describes mixing, shaping, and sintering its material. Certina says the ceramic it describes for watchmaking is fired above 900°C; that temperature is specific to Certina’s description, not a universal requirement for every maker or formulation.
The history has two distinct milestones. The American Ceramic Society dates the Rado DiaStar to 1962 and describes it as the first scratch-resistant watch, using tungsten carbide and sapphire crystal. Rado dates its introduction of high-tech ceramic in watches to 1986. The earlier claim concerns a scratch-resistant watch made with different materials, not the arrival of high-tech ceramic.

What to check before choosing a ceramic watch
- Formulation and finish: Look for the maker’s description of the exact ceramic or composite and how the case is finished. Treat scratch resistance as a useful everyday property, not invulnerability.
- Impact exposure: Consider whether the watch is likely to take knocks or be dropped onto hard surfaces, and whether the possibility of a chipped or fractured component is acceptable.
- Case construction: A watch may combine ceramic with another material. Grand Seiko describes one sport series with a zirconia ceramic outer case and a titanium inner case, rather than a case made entirely of ceramic.
- Fit and appearance: Compare the actual watch’s weight, feel, color, and finish; these are model- and construction-specific.
- Service support: Ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider how the exact model is handled if a case component breaks, including whether that component can be replaced. Repair policy and cost vary; no universal repair policy or service price applies across ceramic watches.
There is no established universal numerical ranking of ceramic, steel, and titanium cases for impact resistance. The available manufacturer and organization guidance supports the qualitative tradeoff, but not a cross-brand comparison conducted under one shared test method.
