Regulation directly adjusts a watch movement’s rate; finishing describes craft and presentation. Decorative finishing alone does not demonstrate that a watch will keep time more accurately. To assess an accuracy claim, look for measured results and check whether they apply to the movement or the complete watch, which positions and conditions were tested, and what tolerance was stated.
What is the difference between movement finishing and regulation?
| Aspect | Movement finishing | Regulation |
|---|---|---|
| What it concerns | Craft and presentation of movement components and surfaces. | Adjustment of the movement’s rate: how quickly or slowly it runs. |
| Primary purpose | Visual appearance and quality of execution. | To bring the rate toward a target and assess its performance. |
| What verifies it | Inspection of the finishing itself. | Timed measurements, ideally under a stated protocol and across positions. |
A movement can be both finely finished and accurately regulated, but evidence of one does not establish the other. Available manufacturer and certification descriptions distinguish presentation from rate adjustment and testing; they do not establish that every possible finishing operation has zero effect on rate.

Does finishing improve a watch’s accuracy?
Finishing alone is not evidence of better timekeeping. The available sources do not provide controlled comparisons quantifying whether particular decorative techniques improve, worsen, or leave rate accuracy unchanged. Treat a connection between finishing and accuracy as unproven unless it is supported by specific performance measurements.
For a meaningful accuracy claim, ask what was measured and how. A movement-only result may not describe the watch once cased, and a result from one position may not represent performance in other positions. A stated tolerance is most useful when the source also explains the test scope.

How does regulation change a movement’s rate?
On a movement with a regulator arm, moving the regulator changes the effective length of the hairspring and thereby changes the rate. This is an adjustment aimed at timekeeping, unlike a decorative treatment. The exact method depends on the movement’s design: ETA notes that some calibers are adjusted at the factory by laser and do not use a conventional regulator system. ETA also says that shocks can cause micro-displacements in traditional regulator systems and claims that its regulator-free approach gives better rate stability at the end of barrel winding. That is ETA’s design claim, not a universal comparison across all calibers. ETA’s explanation of precision stability and Escapement’s practical guide to regulation describe these approaches.
Why do positions and test conditions matter?
A watch can show different rates in different positions or under different conditions. NOMOS says its fully assembled calibers must prove their accuracy in all positions; its production description includes a one-day settling period followed by one week of testing and fine-tuning across six positions using a timegrapher. That is a description of NOMOS’s process, not a general tolerance for all watches. NOMOS’s regulation explanation describes the procedure.

Testing a movement alone is not the same as testing a complete watch. METAS distinguishes ISO 3159 chronometer testing of the movement from the finished-watch requirements for Master Chronometer certification. Its overview also describes testing under several influencing factors, including temperature, positions, magnetisation and used power reserve. METAS’s watch certification overview sets out that scope.
How do published accuracy tolerances compare?
These figures refer to different tests and scopes; they should not be read as interchangeable promises of the rate a particular owner will observe.

| Source and test | Published rate figure | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|
| METAS, ISO 3159 | −4 to +6 seconds per day | Average-rate range for the movement-only chronometer test. |
| METAS, Master Chronometer under METAS-N001 | 0 to +5 seconds per day | Finished-watch rate requirement. |
| Rolex, Superlative Chronometer | −4/+6 seconds per day at the movement stage, then −2/+2 seconds per day for the cased watch | A two-stage assessment: movement first, followed by a cased-watch protocol simulating wear. |
| Patek Philippe, caliber CHR 29-535 PS Q | −3 to +2 seconds per 24 hours | Stated for calibers at least 20 mm in diameter in the cited instructions; it is not a general figure for every watch from the brand. |
The certification and manufacturer pages describe their own protocols and requirements. They do not guarantee that every watch will maintain its stated test rate on every wearer’s wrist. See METAS, Rolex’s precision explanation and Patek Philippe’s instructions for caliber CHR 29-535 PS Q.

A rate change is not automatically a sign that the regulator needs adjustment. Magnetism, service condition and positional variation can also matter. Patek Philippe notes that position, temperature, air pressure, vibration and wearer activity can affect observed accuracy. Its manual also describes service as disassembly, cleaning, inspection, lubrication and regulation when necessary. A sudden change or an inconsistent rate is a reason to have the watch assessed rather than assume a simple adjustment will solve it.

- Observe the rate over time. Compare the watch with a reliable time reference over several days, keeping track of how it is worn or stored. A single reading cannot show whether a rate is consistent.
- Ask what a measurement covers. A watchmaker can assess the watch on a timegrapher and check its behavior in different positions. A timegrapher is a diagnostic aid, not a direct substitute for observing the watch during use.
- Consider possible causes beyond regulation. If the rate changed suddenly or varies substantially, ask a qualified watchmaker to check for magnetism and service-related issues as well as rate adjustment.
Do not open a valuable watch or move its regulator yourself. The balance and hairspring are delicate, and free-sprung balances use a different adjustment method from regulator-arm designs. Most owners can ask a watchmaker to measure the watch rather than buy timing equipment.
