Movement finishing can show how carefully visible surfaces and edges were prepared, but it cannot prove that a watch keeps accurate time, will be reliable, or is easy to service. Treat Geneva stripes, perlage and polished bevels as evidence of decorative execution—not as a performance test or a complete quality verdict.
What movement finishing can tell you
Finishing is the treatment of a movement’s surfaces and edges. Some of it is visible through a display back; some may be hidden once the movement is assembled. On the parts you can inspect, finishing can offer clues about preparation, consistency and attention to detail.

Look at the execution rather than relying on the name of a technique. Repeated patterns should appear even, edges should be clean, and the finish should follow the component’s shape. These are visual observations, not proof of what is happening inside the watch.

Côtes de Genève, or Geneva stripes
These are repeated abrasive bands, commonly applied to bridges or rotors. They are decorative; their presence does not establish a movement’s accuracy or overall quality.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Perlage
Perlage is overlapping circular graining, often applied to plates or other surfaces. Patek Philippe describes the result as a pearl-like pattern in its account of hand finishing.
Anglage, or bevelling
Anglage shapes and polishes the edge between a component’s top surface and its side. Patek Philippe describes a polished bevel and says, “Beveling or chamfering, known as anglage in French, is considered one of the most complicated of finish methods.” That is the manufacturer’s characterization, not a universal ranking of finishing techniques.

Other surface treatments
Circular satin finish and straight graining create controlled circular or parallel lines. Jaeger-LeCoultre also lists burnishing, polished screw heads and countersinking jewels among finishing techniques in its description of watchmaking finishing. These manufacturer descriptions explain the terms; they are not independent comparative standards.

A decorative pattern does not tell you how accurately a watch runs, how it behaves in different positions or temperatures, or whether it will remain reliable. The evidence here does not establish that Geneva stripes or perlage improve accuracy. Nor can a visible finish reveal the condition of hidden components or whether the watch is due for service.

“Hand-finished” also does not, by itself, mean “more accurate.” The label describes work on surfaces or edges; rate performance needs its own evidence. A beautifully finished movement can still require a timekeeping test.
How certifications answer a different question
Certifications have distinct scopes. Compare what is tested—a movement or a finished watch—and which conditions or functions are included. A rate range from one certification should not be treated as a promise for another mark or for a specific watch’s everyday performance.

A practical way to assess a finished movement
- Identify the technique. Determine whether you are looking at stripes, circular graining, a bevel or another surface treatment.
- Inspect its execution. Check for consistent repeated patterns, clean edges and finishing that follows the component’s geometry.
- Separate appearance from performance. For timekeeping claims, look for a named test or certification and read what it actually covers.
- Assess the whole watch separately. Finishing alone cannot establish hidden-part condition, reliability or serviceability.
A loupe can make a small bevel or surface pattern easier to see, but magnification does not reveal rate accuracy, hidden quality or service condition.
