But those facts alone cannot settle the title’s skeptical question: the available evidence does not show whether the releases were unusually important, or whether the attention they received was excessive.
What happened at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024?
The fair ran April 9–15, 2024, at Palexpo in Geneva. Its first four days were reserved for industry professionals; members of the public could attend April 13–15. The Watches and Wonders Geneva Foundation also promoted a city program alongside the fair. The Foundation’s April 4 program announcement set out the schedule and public access.
How big was the event?
In its April 15 closing report, the Watches and Wonders Geneva Foundation said the event welcomed more than 49,000 unique visitors, including 5,700 retailers and 1,500 journalists, and featured 54 exhibiting brands. These are figures reported by the organizer, not independently audited attendance statistics. The Foundation’s closing report also described the edition as reaching new heights.
What the business figures do—and do not—show
The Foundation reported more than 10,000 retailer appointments, 1,800 press “Touch & Feel” sessions, and a significant increase in end-client orders. The appointments and sessions indicate organized trade and media activity; the order increase is an organizer’s characterization, with no comparison figures or independent market-impact analysis provided in the cited report. They show that the event generated activity, not how much it changed the watch market.

The Foundation’s trend summary highlighted classic and unisex proportions, bold colors, interchangeable bracelets, grand complications, and métiers d’art—the decorative crafts used in watchmaking. That is the organizer’s overview rather than a measured comparison of releases with other years.
Contemporary coverage offered a more specific visual observation. In an April 12 report, Le Monde’s Maud Gabrielson described blue as the show’s dominant color and discussed watches from Rolex, Baume & Mercier, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Montblanc, and Oris. Was it spectacle, substance, or both?
The answer depends on what is being judged. On scale and access, this was a substantial event: the organizer reported tens of thousands of visitors, dozens of exhibiting brands, and three public days after the trade opening. On design, the Foundation identified several broad directions, while Le Monde singled out blue. On commercial impact, the organizer cited appointments and increased end-client orders, but the published figures do not independently demonstrate a market-wide effect.
The evidence does not rate the quality, originality, or value of the watches, compare the 2024 releases with other editions, or measure whether coverage was disproportionate. Calling the fair “much ado about nothing” therefore goes beyond what these sources can prove. It is a critical opinion a reader may hold, not a conclusion established by attendance or trend reporting.
