The organizer reported more than 49,000 unique visitors and over 10,000 retailer appointments. The event offers a useful view of how watchmaking craft is presented within luxury commerce—but its figures do not establish a conflict between the luxury industry and watchmaking, or measure the broader market.
What was Watches & Wonders Geneva 2024?
The fair ran April 9–15 at Palexpo in Geneva. The first four days were reserved for professionals; the general public could attend April 13–15. The organizer described the 2024 edition as the first time the Salon opened to the public for three days. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry also describes the professional days followed by three public days.
Its format put two audiences in one event: trade visitors conducting business and public visitors encountering brands, watches, and watchmaking culture. That combination is central to understanding both the fair’s scale and the limits of what its numbers can tell us.
How large was the fair, and what do its figures show?
The organizer’s April 15 closing press kit reported over 49,000 unique visitors during the week, up 14% from 2023. It counted 5,700 retailers and 1,500 journalists, with 54 watchmaking brands exhibiting across two levels. The Federation likewise reported about 49,000 visitors and 54 participating Maisons, including eight newcomers. Palexpo’s annual report lists 74,000 m², 49,000 participants, and 54 exhibitors for the event.

These are event and venue figures, not audited measures of the whole watch sector or luxury market. The visitor count also should not be confused with the separate count of public tickets.
Business activity was not the same as sales data
The organizer reported more than 10,000 retailer appointments, up 25% versus 2023, and 1,800 “Touch & Feel” press sessions. Those are counts of meetings and press sessions. The closing release also described a significant increase in end-client orders, but supplied no total or other quantified order measure. That statement cannot be used to calculate sales growth or compare brand performance.

Public access in numbers
The closing press kit reported 19,000 tickets, compared with 12,000 in 2023, and said 25% were sold to people under 25. It gave the average age on the public days as 35, the same as in 2023. These are organizer-reported ticket and audience figures, not a demographic survey of every visitor to the fair.
What could the public do?
The public program included product presentations, guided tours, workshops, and other activities. The organizer said reserved activities were fully booked before the event began. Its April 4 pre-event release described an educational and cultural program, including a new Watchmaking Village in central Geneva, activities for children, guided tours, and opportunities to meet apprentices and professionals.
In that release, Watches and Wonders Geneva Foundation CEO Matthieu Humair said: “We have noticed a growing interest in our industry from the younger generation, with an average age of 35 on the public days, which is extremely encouraging.” The age figure is the organizer’s reported average for public days; the quote reflects Humair’s interpretation of it.
Which watchmaking ideas did the organizer highlight?
The closing press kit and the Swiss federation’s account described several themes in the watches on show. These are the organizer’s and federation’s observations, not the results of a representative survey of every watch released in 2024.
Rank #4
- Classic and unisex proportions: a return to more traditional sizing and designs presented as suitable across genders.
- Bold colors: color was singled out as a notable design feature.
- Interchangeable bracelets and straps: versatility and changing a watch’s look were among the themes highlighted.
- Grand complications: technically ambitious watches remained prominent in the fair’s account.
- Métiers d’art: decorative crafts were framed as meeting watchmaking engineering, bringing visual artistry and mechanical work together.
The list is best read as a snapshot of what the event’s organizers chose to emphasize, rather than a ranking of the industry’s priorities or a claim that every brand followed the same direction.

The title’s “versus” framing works as a question about how craft and commerce coexist, not as a finding that the sectors are opposed. Watches & Wonders gathered brands and retailers in a high-profile commercial setting while presenting watchmaking through craftsmanship, innovation, technical complexity, decorative arts, and public education.

The organizer’s closing press kit put its own interpretation this way: “Throughout the week, the watchmaking industry demonstrated its diversity, as well as its unity around its cardinal values: innovation, craftsmanship, excellence and sharing.” That is the organizer’s characterization of the event. Attendance, retailer appointments, and design themes do not by themselves show whether luxury business interests support or undermine watchmaking craft, nor do they reveal market-wide sales or company performance.
What the 2024 recap tells watch enthusiasts
Watches & Wonders Geneva 2024 was a large trade and public event, with professional access first and three public days at the end. Its reported business activity, public programming, and selected design themes show how the fair positioned watchmaking for retailers, journalists, and enthusiasts. They do not establish a broader luxury-versus-watchmaking contest: the stronger takeaway is that craft was presented inside a luxury marketplace, without the event figures proving how that relationship affects the wider industry.
