What your Apple Watch can do depends on its model and, for some features, a nearby iPhone, Bluetooth headphones, language, or region.
This roundup describes features Apple announced; the research for this article did not independently test their real-world performance. Check Apple’s current support information for compatibility and availability before relying on a particular feature.
Does my Apple Watch support watchOS 26?
Compatibility with watchOS 26 does not mean every feature is available on every compatible watch. Apple’s announcement names specific models for wrist flick, while Workout Buddy requires Bluetooth headphones and an Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone nearby. Health and communication features may also have model, language, or regional limits.
Because the available research does not establish a complete current compatibility or country-by-country availability list, check Apple’s current support documentation for your watch, iPhone, and region.

1. Workout Buddy offers personalized spoken encouragement
Workout Buddy uses Apple Intelligence with workout data and fitness history to provide spoken encouragement, highlight milestones, and recap a session. Apple says it requires Bluetooth headphones and an Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone nearby. Its launch announcement described support in English for selected workout types, not every watch, language, workout, or iPhone combination.
Do you need headphones for Workout Buddy? Yes, Apple lists Bluetooth headphones as a requirement. That does not mean headphones are required for every Apple Watch workout.
2. The Workout app has a redesigned layout
Apple describes the Workout app update as its biggest layout change since the app’s introduction. The redesign makes workout views, custom workouts, Pacer, Race Route, and other options easier to access.
3. Workouts can start music or podcasts
You can configure audio to start when a workout begins. Apple Music can select or suggest music based on workout type and listening tastes. The research does not establish a subscription requirement, so check Apple’s current terms rather than assuming one.

4. Sleep Score summarizes several aspects of a night
Apple’s Sleep Score draws on sleep duration, bedtime consistency, awakenings, and time in sleep stages. It is intended to help users understand sleep quality, not to provide a medical diagnosis.
Apple reports that more than 5 million nights of Apple Heart and Movement Study data were used to develop and test the scoring algorithms. That figure describes Apple’s development data; it is not independent validation of the score’s clinical value.
5. Hypertension notifications can flag a pattern for follow-up
Apple announced notifications intended to identify signs consistent with chronic high blood pressure. A notification is not a blood-pressure measurement or diagnosis. Apple described the feature as FDA-cleared in its release-day material, but eligibility and availability should be checked for your model and jurisdiction.
Do not treat a notification as a substitute for medical advice, a blood-pressure reading, or care from a health professional. Apple’s product description is not independent evidence of clinical effectiveness.

6. Smart Stack hints can use context
The Smart Stack can surface suggestions based on contextual, sensor, and routine data. Apple’s examples include a Backtrack suggestion in a remote place and a workout suggestion at a familiar studio. These are examples of intended behavior, not a guarantee that the watch will always predict what you need.
7. Wrist flick adds a one-handed gesture
On the models named in Apple’s announcement—Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2—a wrist movement can dismiss notifications and calls, silence alarms and timers, or return to the watch face. Confirm current support for your model in Apple’s documentation.
8. Notes are available on the wrist
Apple Watch users can access and pin notes, unlock protected notes, complete checklist items, and create notes with Siri, dictation, or the keyboard. The feature can help with short lists and reminders when your iPhone is not in hand.
9. Messages and Phone interactions gain new options
Apple announced Live Translation in Messages. Hold Assist and Call Screening are available in the Phone app when an iPhone is nearby, according to Apple’s feature announcement. Language and regional limits may apply; check current Apple support information before relying on them.

What can Apple Watch do now?
The watchOS 26 feature set spans fitness, health awareness, communication, accessibility, and convenience rather than adding one single capability. The most useful change depends on what you do with your watch: spoken workout feedback, a sleep summary, contextual suggestions, or more ways to handle tasks from your wrist.
Before planning around a feature, check its specific requirements. In particular, Workout Buddy needs Bluetooth headphones and an Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone nearby, and Apple names particular models for wrist flick. Apple’s announcements describe product capabilities; this research did not independently verify performance.
