Kari Voutilainen’s Observatoire is a rare wristwatch built around a Peseux 260 observatory movement, reworked and finished in Voutilainen’s workshop. Monochrome Watches’ 6 September 2013 photo feature showed an owner’s example; its present condition, ownership and subsequent history are not established by that feature.

What is the Voutilainen Observatoire?

The Observatoire is a limited series of watches that Voutilainen developed around unfinished Peseux 260 movements originally associated with observatory chronometry. The historical competition connection gives the model its character, but it is not proof that every finished watch achieves a particular accuracy today.

Phillips dates the model’s introduction to 2007 and says it received that year’s Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève award for Best Men’s Watch. The maker’s own page confirms a 2007 GPHG award without specifying the category. Phillips estimates that approximately 50 examples were made before the Observatoire was replaced by the Vingt-8 in 2011; that figure is an auction-house estimate, not an official production tally.

What movement is inside?

The movement is based on the Peseux 260 ébauche. Voutilainen describes it as designed, constructed, fabricated, finished and assembled in the workshop. The maker lists a 30 mm movement with a German-silver mainplate and bridges, Swiss lever escapement, 21 jewels and a Phillips-terminal-curve balance spring. It runs at 18,000 vibrations per hour and displays hours, minutes and seconds.

Voutilainen states: “Each movement has been technically adjusted and tested before being finished with hand anglage and perlage to bring it to the highest levels of visual finish possible.” This describes the maker’s preparation and finishing process; it is not a published accuracy result for each watch.

Case, dial and hands

The maker describes the Observatoire with a white-gold case and crown, a blue hand-guilloché gold dial, gold and blued-steel hands, and sapphire crystals on the front and back. Case diameter depends on the documented example: Voutilainen’s page renders its dimension as “3800,” while Phillips records a 39 mm diameter for a 2009 stainless-steel example. Catalogue records also identify white-gold examples at 38 mm. It is more accurate to describe the model as around 38–39 mm than to assign one dimension to every watch.

Why collectors pay attention to the Peseux 260

The Peseux 260’s observatory-competition history is part of the Observatoire’s appeal: it connects a modern independent watch to movements designed for serious timekeeping contests. Voutilainen’s project gives those unfinished movements a new life through technical adjustment and extensive hand finishing. That lineage is meaningful, but it should not be confused with a guarantee of present-day performance or a universal measured result.

How rare is it, and what does an auction result tell you?

Phillips’ estimate of approximately 50 examples indicates a very small series, but it should be treated as an estimate rather than a certified count. The auction house records a 2009 stainless-steel example sold for CHF 381,000. That is one dated result for one specific watch, not a current valuation or a reliable price for every Observatoire variant.

Examples differ in case material, diameter and dial configuration. For a meaningful comparison, establish the particular watch’s identity and assess its condition and documentation rather than relying on the model name alone.

  • Case: Confirm whether it is white gold or stainless steel and verify diameter from the specific record.
  • Dial: Note the configuration and condition of the hand-guilloché surface.
  • Movement: Match serial and identity details to the watch and its documentation.
  • Provenance and completeness: Check for a certificate, box and service records where applicable.
  • Sale context: Compare sale date, currency, estimate, and result; a past auction result is not a current market quote.

The 2013 Weekly Watch Photo

Monochrome Watches published “Weekly Watch Photo – Voutilainen Observatoire” on 6 September 2013, crediting the photographs to Gary, described as the proud owner of the pictured watch. The feature is a period portrait of an individual example, not evidence that it is the same Observatoire as a later auction lot. The pictured watch’s current owner, condition and subsequent sale are not established.
