When comparing watches, movement tells you how the watch keeps time, power reserve tells you how long a wound mechanical watch can run off your wrist, and water resistance tells you how it performed under a pressure test—not the depth at which it is automatically safe. For practical use, check the exact model’s specifications and manufacturer instructions: activity guidance can differ between brands and models.
Movement: how the watch keeps time
A watch’s movement is its timekeeping mechanism. The main comparison is between quartz and mechanical movements, with mechanical watches divided into manual-winding and automatic types.
Quartz
A conventional quartz watch uses an electronic timebase regulated by a quartz crystal and is commonly powered by a battery. Quartz describes the timekeeping mechanism, not a water-resistance level or a power-reserve figure. Power sources can vary, so check the exact model’s product information.
Mechanical: manual or automatic
A mechanical watch stores energy in a mainspring and uses gears to drive its timekeeping. A manual-winding model requires the wearer to wind it. An automatic mechanical watch adds a rotor that winds the mainspring as the wearer moves; Rolex describes this energy transfer in its watch-care guidance.

Do not use the watch at extremely hot or cold temperatures, which can damage the watch and shorten its lifespan. Keep the watch away from magnets as it can damage the movement. Please note that there may be color shifts as the display is different. If you have any question, please feel free to contact us.
Movement type is a practical preference: consider whether you want to wind a watch, replace or recharge its power source as applicable, or wear it often enough to keep an automatic watch running. None of these movement labels establishes how long a particular mechanical watch runs or whether it is suitable for swimming.
Power reserve: how long a mechanical watch runs unworn
Power reserve is the approximate time a mechanical watch can continue running after it has been wound or fully charged, under the conditions stated for that movement. It matters if you rotate between watches or leave one off your wrist for several days: once its reserve runs out, it will stop and need attention before you wear it again.

Compare the stated reserve for the exact model and movement. For example, Longines lists an automatic HydroConquest L3.788.4.70.6 with a power reserve of up to 72 hours. That figure belongs to this specific model listing; it is not a specification for every automatic watch or every HydroConquest variant. The same listing gives this model a water resistance of 30 bar, a separate specification from its reserve. See the Longines product page.
Water resistance: a pressure rating, not a depth promise
Water-resistance figures come from pressure testing. They should not be read as a guarantee that a watch can safely be taken to the same depth in real use. Seiko’s analogue-watch instructions explain that pressure in bar is test pressure and does not correspond directly to actual diving depth, because swimming movements can increase pressure at a given depth. Consult the instructions for the exact watch rather than converting the printed number into a depth limit.

What does 30m water resistant mean?
There is no single activity rule that applies to every brand’s 30 m label. Citizen Watch US says its 30 m rating is for light splashes, not swimming or submersion. Use that guidance for the relevant Citizen watches, not as a universal rule for all manufacturers. Check the model’s manual and product page before exposing it to water.
Can I swim with a 50m watch?
Do not decide from the number alone. Seiko’s own activity chart treats 5 bar as suitable for swimming, yachting and showering, while Citizen’s guidance for 30 m is more restrictive. These are manufacturer-specific examples, not interchangeable guarantees or a universal chart. Look up the exact model’s approved activities, and do not infer that a rating permits swimming unless its manufacturer says so.

Use the maker’s chart for the exact watch
Seiko’s water-resistance FAQ gives the following examples of activities for its categories. They illustrate why the maker’s guidance matters; they should not be applied to other brands or models without checking their instructions.
| Seiko category | Activities listed by Seiko |
|---|---|
| 3 bar | Accidental splashes and rain |
| 5 bar | Swimming, yachting and showering |
| 10–20 bar | Bathing and shallow diving |
| Diver’s watch rated at 200 m | Scuba diving, according to the chart |
Seiko’s chart is published in its water-resistance FAQ. The corresponding watch instructions are available in Seiko’s analogue quartz and mechanical watch manual.

How to compare models for your routine
- Choose the movement that suits how you wear a watch. Decide whether you prefer quartz, manual winding or an automatic mechanism, and consider the winding and maintenance routine you want.
- Check reserve if you are comparing mechanical watches. Use the figure given for the exact model and movement, especially if you expect to leave the watch unworn between uses.
- Match water guidance to your actual activity. For rain, swimming, bathing or diving, check the manufacturer’s activity guidance rather than relying on a metre or bar figure alone.
- Read the model’s care instructions. Check its guidance on the crown, use in water and maintenance, and whether its intended use matches your plans.
One product page can show how these details fit together without implying that a whole collection shares identical specifications. Longines describes HydroConquest as offering automatic or quartz movements depending on the model; the specific L3.788.4.70.6 listing is automatic, states up to 72 hours of power reserve and gives a 30 bar water-resistance rating. Use the individual listing when assessing that reference.
Care can affect water resistance
Water resistance is not necessarily permanent. Seiko says ageing gaskets or shock damage can affect it. Its FAQ states, “A watch’s water resistance is not permanently guaranteed.” Follow the maintenance and inspection advice for the exact model, particularly if the watch is older or has taken an impact.
For Seiko watches, the instructions advise making sure the crown is fully pushed in before water use, not operating it while wet or underwater, and rinsing with fresh water and drying after exposure to seawater. Seiko’s FAQ also says not to wash the watch with the crown pulled out and to avoid rinsing it directly under running water. These are Seiko-specific care instructions; check the relevant manufacturer’s guidance for other watches.
