Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe Seiko Prospex SRPE93 is a clearly documented modern Turtle; the Citizen Promaster NY0040 is a specific legacy reference whose exact specifications are not verified here. That makes this an uneven comparison: Seiko’s published measurements and features can be assessed, but it would be misleading to assign the NY0040 details from later Promaster models or declare a winner on value. If you are considering the Citizen, verify the exact reference and suffix on the watch and listing before comparing it with the SRPE93.
Which watches are being compared?
“Seiko Turtle” covers multiple references, including King Turtle, PADI and limited editions. This comparison uses the Seiko Prospex SRPE93, the specific model on Seiko’s current product page. On the Citizen side, it means the Promaster NY0040 itself—not a newer Promaster that happens to share the broader line’s history.
That distinction matters because the available official Citizen specifications describe later references, not the NY0040. Citizen’s NY0130-08E page says the original version of its dive watch was released in 1989, but that lineage statement does not establish the NY0040’s dimensions, movement, crystal or other specifications. The separate NY0159-57E is also a later reference, not a substitute specification sheet for the NY0040.
What the official specifications establish
| Feature | Seiko Prospex SRPE93 | Citizen Promaster NY0040 |
|---|---|---|
| Case diameter | 45.0 mm (Seiko Watch Corporation, official SRPE93 page) | Not established for the exact reference by the available official source. The 44 mm figure belongs to the later NY0130-08E and NY0159-57E references (Citizen Watch; Citizen Watch Canada). |
| Thickness | 13.4 mm (Seiko Watch Corporation, official SRPE93 page) | Not established for the exact reference. |
| Lug width | 22 mm (Seiko Watch Corporation, official SRPE93 page) | Not established for the exact reference. The 20 mm figure is documented for later NY0130-08E and NY0159-57E references, not the NY0040. |
| Movement | Automatic/manual-winding caliber 4R36; 24 jewels; approximately 41-hour power reserve (Seiko Watch Corporation, official SRPE93 page) | Not established for the exact reference. The 8204 automatic is documented for later Promaster references, not verified here for the NY0040. |
| Calendar | Day/date (Seiko Watch Corporation, official SRPE93 page) | Not established for the exact reference. Day/date is listed on the cited later Promaster references. |
| Crystal | Hardlex (Seiko Watch Corporation, official SRPE93 page) | Not established for the exact reference. Sapphire is specified for the cited later Promaster references, not verified here for the NY0040. |
| Case and strap or bracelet | Stainless-steel case; silicone band (Seiko Watch Corporation, official SRPE93 page) | Not established for the exact reference. |
| Water-resistance statement | 200 m / 660 ft diver’s water resistance; Seiko says the SRPE93 follows ISO standards for scuba diving to depths of up to 200 meters (Seiko Watch Corporation, manufacturer statement) | Not established for the exact reference. The later NY0130-08E and NY0159-57E are listed at 200 m by Citizen, but those are separate models. |
| Bezel and crown | Unidirectional rotating bezel; screw-down crown and screw case back (Seiko Watch Corporation, official SRPE93 page) | Not established for the exact reference. |
| Current listed price | USD 525 on Seiko’s US product page at the time covered by the source; this is a regional listed price, not a transaction-price survey or street-price average. | No verified current price for the exact NY0040 variant. |
In this table, “not established” means the cited information does not verify the claim for the NY0040; it does not mean the watch lacks that feature. Likewise, Seiko’s ISO wording is a manufacturer claim, not an independent certification assessment in this comparison.

How the differences affect a buying decision
Fit and straps
The SRPE93’s stated 45 mm diameter and 13.4 mm thickness are useful starting points, but measurements alone do not determine how a watch will wear. Its 22 mm lug distance is a practical detail if you want to look for another strap. Check the strap’s fit and the watch’s spring-bar and interface details before ordering. Do not assume that 22 mm applies to the NY0040: its exact lug width is not established here.
Movement and ownership expectations
Seiko specifies the SRPE93’s 4R36 as automatic and manually windable, with day/date and an approximately 41-hour power reserve. The exact NY0040 movement and reserve are not verified by the available official reference material. A movement specification is not a comparative accuracy result, so there is no sound basis here to call one model more accurate.

- Analogue for men
- 13 mm calendar day and date buckle
Crystal and visible timing features
The SRPE93 uses Hardlex, while sapphire appears in Citizen’s specifications for the later NY0130-08E and NY0159-57E. Those later-model details cannot be transferred to the NY0040. Seiko documents a unidirectional rotating bezel on the SRPE93; the available exact-reference evidence does not establish the NY0040’s bezel specification. No comparative test supports claims about bezel feel, readability, lume duration or durability.
Water resistance and dive use
Seiko lists the SRPE93 at 200 m / 660 ft diver’s water resistance and states that it follows ISO standards for scuba diving to depths of up to 200 meters. Citizen lists 200 m water resistance for the later NY0130-08E and NY0159-57E, but those figures do not verify the NY0040. A manufacturer water-resistance rating is not a promise that a watch is suitable for every dive condition or will remain water-tight indefinitely; condition and maintenance matter.

What to verify before buying a Citizen NY0040
Because NY0040 is a legacy reference and regional suffixes may identify different listings, inspect the exact watch and documentation rather than relying on a title that says only “Promaster.” Before comparing price or features with the SRPE93, check:
- The complete reference and suffix shown on the watch, paperwork and seller listing.
- The movement, crystal, case dimensions and lug width stated for that exact variant.
- Whether it comes on a bracelet or strap, and what is included in the sale.
- The water-resistance claim and any service or pressure-test documentation relevant to the individual watch.
- The actual current price in your market, including the watch’s condition and seller terms.
Do not use the NY0130-08E or NY0159-57E specification sheet as a shortcut for those checks: Citizen presents them as separate references.

Which affordable automatic dive watch should you buy?
Choose the SRPE93 if you want the better-documented option in this comparison and its stated dimensions, Hardlex crystal, silicone band, 4R36 movement and day/date suit your priorities. Its official US-page price of USD 525 is a listed regional price, not proof of what it currently costs from dealers or on the secondary market.
Consider an NY0040 only after confirming the exact variant’s specifications, condition and price from the listing and watch itself. Without that verification and a same-market price comparison, neither model can responsibly be named the better value. The greater detail available for Seiko reflects the available model-specific documentation, not evidence that the Citizen is inferior.
