Hacking seconds is a watch feature that stops the seconds hand when you pull the crown out to set the time. It lets you synchronize the watch to a reference time down to the second; it does not make the watch keep time more accurately once it is running.
How hacking seconds works
On a typical hacking mechanical movement, pulling the crown into its time-setting position engages a lever that stops the balance wheel. The gear train and seconds hand stop with it. Push the crown back in, and the lever releases so the movement can run again. The precise mechanism varies by movement.
The feature is also called stop-seconds or seconds-stop. The term “hacking” is commonly linked to military time synchronization: a group could stop their seconds hands at a shared signal and restart them together. That is a commonly given explanation, not a definitively established etymology.
What hacking seconds is useful for
With a hacking watch, pull the crown when the seconds hand reaches the desired point, set the hour and minute hands against a reference clock, then push the crown back in at the intended second. This makes precise synchronization easier. If a watch does not hack, its seconds hand continues moving while you set it, so matching an exact second is harder, though you can still set the hour and minute.

Does hacking make a watch more accurate?
No. Hacking improves precision when setting the displayed time; it does not improve the movement’s rate accuracy while the watch is running. A non-hacking watch can keep time well, and the presence of hacking alone is not a measure of a watch’s quality or accuracy.

- Check the manufacturer’s specifications or movement documentation for “hacking seconds,” “stop seconds,” or “stop-seconds.”
- If the watch is running, pull the crown to the time-setting position and see whether the seconds hand stops. Follow the watch’s manual for safe crown operation.
The feature depends on the specific movement and model, so do not assume every mechanical watch has it. For example, Pinion lists hacking seconds for the Neutron, which uses an automatic ETA 2824-2 movement, on its official product page.
