For the familiar mechanical-watch criterion, the movement is tested for 15 days and must average between −4 and +6 seconds per day, though the stated tolerance varies for smaller calibres.
What a COSC certificate certifies
A chronometer is a watch whose movement has received an official rate certificate from COSC, the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute, after passing precision tests in different positions and temperatures. The certificate is evidence that the movement met the applicable test criteria; it is not a general certification of every aspect of the watch.

That distinction matters when a watch is advertised as a chronometer. The ordinary COSC claim concerns the tested movement. COSC’s 2025 general terms describe collective test certificates and optional individual certificates that include detailed results (COSC general terms).
How the mechanical movement test works
Chopard describes the mechanical test as 15 days of measurement in five positions and at three temperatures. Certina also describes a 15-day test of automatic chronometers across different positions and temperatures. These controlled conditions make it possible to assess rate consistency rather than relying on a single reading (Chopard FAQ; Certina’s COSC explanation).

- Water-resistant up to a pressure of 10 bar (100 m / 330 ft): suitable for short periods of recreational swimming and showering, but no diving or snorkeling.
The familiar mechanical rate range
For mechanical movements, Certina gives the familiar COSC criterion as −4 to +6 seconds per day. Chopard specifies that this range applies to calibres over 20 mm; for smaller calibres, it gives a range of −5 to +8 seconds per day. The size qualification is important: −4/+6 seconds per day should not be presented as the tolerance for every mechanical movement (Chopard FAQ; Certina’s COSC explanation).
These figures describe the permitted rate under the certification test, not a promise that a particular watch will run at the same rate in every position or circumstance. Nor does a daily rate range mean every tested movement runs at the maximum slow or fast limit.

Why a certified watch can run differently in daily use
After testing, real-world rate can be affected by impacts, aging lubricants, temperature changes, magnetic fields and the wearer’s activity. The test establishes that the movement passed its defined evaluation; it cannot guarantee an unchanged rate through later wear and changing conditions. Baume & Mercier identifies these factors when explaining watch accuracy (Baume & Mercier’s accuracy FAQ).

If a watch’s rate changes noticeably, certification status alone cannot diagnose why. The factors above can affect performance over time, so a watchmaker can assess the watch and determine whether regulation or other service is appropriate.

Mechanical and quartz criteria are different
The mechanical −4/+6 figure does not apply to quartz chronometers. Certina states separate quartz tolerances: ±0.07 seconds per day at 23°C, and ±0.2 seconds per day at 8°C and 38°C. These are temperature-specific quartz criteria, not alternate figures for mechanical watches (Certina’s COSC explanation).
How the newer Excellence level differs
In March 2026, the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry reported that COSC had added an Excellence Chronometer Certified level. It extends movement testing with five additional days of evaluation of complete watches, following the movement test. That is a separate, expanded level; it should not be confused with the ordinary claim that a movement is COSC-certified (Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, March 2026).

When comparing certification claims, check what was tested (movement or complete watch), the test duration and conditions, the applicable rate range, and whether an additional manufacturer or certification level adds requirements. The sources cited here do not establish a basis for ranking different standards as categorically best.

- It tells you: the movement passed an official, controlled rate test under the applicable criteria.
- It does not tell you: the exact rate your watch will maintain in daily wear or how it will perform indefinitely after the test.
- It does not establish by itself: the watch’s overall quality in areas beyond the certified rate performance.
A COSC-certified watch is a meaningful choice if you value documented movement testing. Treat the certificate as evidence of tested precision, not as a substitute for considering the rest of the watch or its condition over time.
