Identify the movement and find its instructions
Mechanical watches use a mainspring to power the movement. Some are wound by hand only; many automatic watches can also be hand-wound. Neither the winding direction nor the number of turns is universal, and crown positions and setting procedures can differ even among watches from the same manufacturer.

Find the model or calibre number on the watch, its paperwork, or the manufacturer’s product information, then consult that exact manual. For example, Seiko provides separate instructions for its 2R05/2R06 movements and its 6R-series movements, while Citizen’s 9054 has its own date-setting sequence. MIDO likewise directs owners to the instructions specific to their watch.

- Whether the movement supports hand winding.
- Whether the crown screws down, and how to unlock and secure it.
- Which crown position winds the watch and which sets the time or calendar.
- The prescribed winding direction and any model-specific winding guidance.
- How to set the date, day, or other complications, and whether the watch has stop-seconds.
How to wind the watch safely
- Unlock a screw-down crown, if fitted. Follow the manual’s method for unscrewing it. Do not pull or operate a crown while it is still threaded.
- Use the winding position. Put the crown in the position specified by the manual; the correct position depends on the watch.
- Turn slowly and gently in the stated direction. Citizen cautions that forceful turning can cause excessive wear or damage to components. If the crown feels unusually stiff or meets resistance, stop rather than forcing it.
- Follow only that model’s winding guidance. Do not transfer a turn count from another watch. As a model-specific example, Rolex says to wind a stopped Rolex clockwise and recommends at least 25 turns for an adequate partial winding; that guidance is not a universal rule for mechanical watches.
- Return and secure the crown. Push it back to its normal position and screw it down as directed if it is a screw-down type.
Seiko’s instructions for the 6R20/6R21/6R24/6R27 family specify slow clockwise winding and report about 45 hours of power reserve when fully wound. Both the direction and reserve figure apply to that cited movement family, not to mechanical watches generally.

How to set the time and date
Use the manual’s crown-position diagram and sequence rather than assuming that every watch sets the same way. A crown may have separate positions for winding, calendar adjustment, and time-setting; some movements stop the seconds hand when the time is set, while others do not. MIDO notes that stop-seconds is absent on some of its calibres.
- Confirm the correct setting position. Pull or turn the crown only as described for your model.
- Set the time as instructed. Follow any specified direction or sequence and use the stop-seconds function only if your movement has one.
- Set calendar functions using the model’s procedure. Check the instructions before changing the date or day, especially if the watch has multiple calendar displays.
- Push the crown back in and secure it. If it screws down, follow the manufacturer’s directions to thread it back into place without forcing it.
Date-setting cautions are model-specific. Citizen warns that on the 9054, turning backward while switching its date display can make the watch show the wrong date. Follow that instruction for the 9054; do not assume the same restriction or a universal “danger window” applies to every mechanical watch.

What to do if something feels wrong
- The crown will not turn normally: Stop. Check that a screw-down crown is unlocked and confirm the correct crown position in the manual. Do not apply extra force.
- The watch does not start after winding: Consult the exact manual or contact the manufacturer or a qualified watch-service provider rather than increasing the winding force.
- The date or another display behaves unexpectedly: Stop adjusting it and check the model-specific setting sequence. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider if the controls continue to behave abnormally.
Secure the crown before exposure to water
A screw-down crown must be properly secured for the watch’s intended water resistance. Rolex and MIDO instruct owners to restore the crown after operating it. Securing the crown does not by itself establish that an older or unmaintained watch still meets its original water-resistance specification; follow the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance if water exposure matters.
