How do you read a typical diver’s bezel?
A diver’s bezel usually has a distinct zero marker—often a triangle—and a minute scale around the ring. On the Orient model described in its instructions, one full rotation represents 60 minutes. To time an interval, turn the bezel until the zero marker sits opposite the current minute hand. As time passes, read the number on the bezel that the minute hand points to: if it points to 20, 20 minutes have elapsed.

What does the triangle on my watch bezel mean?
When a triangle marks zero on a 0–60 scale, it gives you a clear starting point for timing. The zero marker’s shape can vary, so check the scale and your watch’s instructions rather than assuming every triangle or bezel has the same function.
How do you use the bezel for a countdown?
You can also position the bezel to show time remaining until a target minute. For a 20-minute countdown, Orient’s example is to align the 40-minute mark with the minute hand; when the hand reaches the zero marker, the interval is up. The setting method depends on the watch, so follow its instructions.

Why does my dive watch bezel only turn one way?
Many diver’s bezels rotate counterclockwise only. If the bezel is accidentally knocked out of position, this one-way action is designed to avoid making elapsed dive time appear shorter than it is. Seiko’s instructions describe the bezel’s elapsed-time display as a guide during diving; Seiko and Citizen also caution that it does not replace checking remaining air or using specialized dive instruments.
What do other bezel markings mean?
A rotating bezel is not always a dive timer. The scale or symbols, the hand used with them and the watch’s instructions determine the function.

How can you identify what your bezel is for?
- Look at the markings: a 0–60 minute scale, 24-hour values, city abbreviations, compass points and a tachymeter scale suggest different jobs.
- Check which hand or function goes with the scale: a minute hand is used with a diver’s elapsed-time scale; a 24-hour hand is used with a 24-hour scale; a chronograph is used with a tachymeter.
- Check whether the bezel turns and in which direction: a scale may be fixed or rotating, and the permitted direction varies by model.
- Consult the exact model’s instructions: similar-looking bezels can have different settings and reading procedures.
Orient Watch USA says it often receives the question, “What do I use my diver’s bezel for?” The practical answer depends on the markings: the familiar 0–60 scale tracks minutes, but other bezel scales are not read as elapsed minutes.
