A dive watch’s water-resistance rating describes how it performs under specified pressure tests; it is not an unconditional promise that you can safely take the watch to the printed depth. For scuba diving, look for an explicit divers’ watch specification and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model.
What the number on a dive watch tells you
A marking such as “100 m” or “200 m” communicates a water-resistance rating. It does not, by itself, establish that the watch is suitable for diving to that depth. Pressure increases with depth, and water resistance is tested under specified conditions; the marking should not be read as a guarantee for every real-world situation.

Depth and pressure are related, but the conversion is approximate. ISO’s consumer explainer gives examples of about 1 bar of overpressure at 10 metres and 5 bars at 50 metres. These figures explain the relationship between depth and pressure; they do not certify a particular watch for use at those depths. ISO’s depth and pressure explainer

ISO has separate standards for general water-resistant watches and divers’ watches. A depth marking alone does not show that a watch conforms to the divers’ watch standard.
#1 Best Overall
- DIVER-INSPIRED DESIGN — Inspired by the sea, the MDV-106G is styled after classic dive watches and delivers 200-meter water resistance at an unbeatable price point. The black resin band and stainless steel case give it a classic look, while the anti-reverse rotary bezel adds authentic dive-watch character.
- STAINLESS STEEL CASE WITH SCREW-LOCK CROWN & CASEBACK — The MDV-106G features a stainless steel case and a reliable screw-lock crown for enhanced water resistance protection. Screw-down crown and screw-lock caseback work together to keep the movement sealed and secure during water activities — a construction standard found on dive watches far above this price range.
- LARGE FLUORESCENT HANDS & INDICES FOR INSTANT READABILITY — The dial features hands and hour indices with large fluorescent areas for easy reading in low-light and underwater conditions. The clean 3-hand analog layout with date display at 3 o'clock keeps the dial uncluttered and immediately legible at a glance.
- 44MM STAINLESS STEEL CASE | 22MM LUG WIDTH | MINERAL GLASS — The case measures 44mm in diameter, 12mm in height, with a 49mm lug-to-lug length and a standard 22mm lug width — making strap upgrades effortless with a vast range of aftermarket options. Mineral glass protects the dial from everyday scratches and impacts.
- 3-YEAR BATTERY & 200M WATER RESISTANCE — Powered by an SR626SW battery with an approximate 3-year life, the case measures 49.5 × 46.3 × 12.1mm and weighs 92 grams. At 200 meters of water resistance, the Duro is versatile and suitable for all situations — whether in the water, hiking, running, or at the office.
| Standard | What it covers | Status stated by ISO |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 22810:2010 | Requirements and test methods for water-resistant watches, including permitted marking. | Published in August 2010; reviewed and confirmed in 2021 as current. ISO 22810:2010 |
| ISO 6425:2018 | Divers’ watches, including saturation divers’ watches. Its published scope covers watches designed for depths of at least 100 m and equipped with a secured diving-time measuring system visible in darkness. | Edition 4, published in October 2018; reviewed and confirmed in 2024 as current. ISO 6425:2018 |
The “at least 100 m” figure describes the scope of ISO 6425:2018. It is not proof that any watch marked 100 m meets that standard or is appropriate for a dive to 100 metres.
How to judge a specific watch
- Find the exact model’s specifications. Check the manufacturer’s product information or manual rather than relying on the watch’s category name or a depth marking alone.
- Look for an explicit divers’ watch specification. A rating such as “200 m” does not, on its own, establish conformity with ISO 6425.
- Follow the maker’s stated use and limits. Standards describe general requirements and tests; the model’s own instructions are the relevant guidance for how its maker intends it to be used.
- Consider the watch’s condition. A general standard cannot establish whether an individual watch still retains its resistance after seals age or the watch is damaged. If you are unsure, ask a qualified watch service provider about inspection or testing before relying on it in water.
What “200 m water resistance” means
It means the watch carries a stated water-resistance rating associated with a pressure level; it does not, by itself, mean that the watch is guaranteed for every activity or for a real-world dive to 200 metres. Whether it is suitable for swimming or diving depends on the exact model’s specifications and manufacturer guidance. Do not infer ISO 6425 conformity from the number alone.

Why the rating is not a blanket guarantee
ISO describes water resistance as coming under strain as depth and pressure increase. Its published summaries explain the standards’ scopes and status, but they do not establish the condition, test result, or permitted use of an unidentified watch. A rating should therefore be read as a specification with limits—not as a promise that every watch carrying that number can be used in every circumstance associated with that depth.
