“Destro” describes a watch with its crown on the left side of the case, a layout traditionally intended for wear on the right wrist. It is a description of the watch’s configuration—not a rule that only left-handed people can wear it.
What “Destro” means
On a conventional analogue watch, the crown—the small control used to set the time and, on many watches, wind the movement—is usually on the right side of the case. A Destro watch moves the crown to the left. On some models, the crown is protected by a bridge or guard, which is also positioned on the left.

The word is associated with the Italian word for “right,” referring to the wrist the layout was traditionally intended for. The two directions are easy to mix up: the crown is on the left side of the case, while the conventional intended wrist is the right wrist.

Panerai explains the arrangement in the context of diving. Its product description says the left-side crown-protective bridge made it possible to wear the watch on the right wrist, leaving the diver’s dominant hand free to operate instruments such as a compass or depth gauge. Panerai’s PAM01732 product page gives this explanation for that model.

Panerai’s account of its history describes Italian Navy frogmen wearing navigational instruments on the left wrist and a Panerai watch on the right. That is the manufacturer’s explanation of its design history, not a universal explanation for every watch with a left-side crown. Crown and pusher placement can also reflect technical or design choices; a left-side crown alone does not establish that a watch was made exclusively for left-handed wearers.
How to tell a Destro watch from a conventional layout

Check the crown itself or, on a watch with a protective structure, the side of the case where that guard sits. The word refers to this left-side layout; it does not tell you whether the watch will be comfortable on your wrist.

Does Destro mean the watch is only for left-handed people?
No. The configuration is traditionally associated with right-wrist wear, which can suit someone who wants to keep the dominant hand free or prefers the crown on the opposite side. But handedness does not dictate who can wear one. The practical question is whether the crown position, case and controls feel accessible and comfortable on the wrist you choose.

Panerai’s page for the Luminor Destro 8 Giorni PAM01655 says, “The first left-handed watch appeared in the 1960s, with the variant ref. 6152/1, which marked a key evolution.” That is a claim in the manufacturer’s own history of its design. It does not establish the first Destro watch across all makers; the available material does not support a definitive industry-wide first.

A concrete example
Panerai’s official UK product page lists the Luminor Destro PAM01732 as a 44 mm steel watch and describes its crown-protective bridge on the left side of the case. What to consider if you are choosing one
- Wrist comfort: Try the watch on the wrist where you plan to wear it. The Destro label does not guarantee a better fit.
- Crown access: Consider whether you can comfortably reach and operate the crown in your preferred wearing position.
- Case size: Check the case dimensions against your wrist and comfort preferences.
- Movement and features: Assess these separately from crown orientation; “Destro” describes the layout, not the watch’s other specifications.
