How to Read an Asymmetrical Watch Dial

An asymmetrical watch dial has no universal reading rule. Identify each hand’s function, match it to its scale, and read separate time indications independently.

Read an asymmetrical watch dial by identifying what each hand, subdial, aperture, and scale indicates, then matching each one to its own markings. There is no universal asymmetrical-dial layout: the hour and minute hands may have separate pivots, and extra hands may show another time zone or a different kind of time altogether.

Start by identifying what each indication does

Asymmetrical describes how a dial is arranged; it does not define a particular time-reading mechanism. Look for labels, numerals, colored hands, and scale markings, and use them to work out which indication belongs to which function. A hand positioned away from the center may still show ordinary hours or minutes, while another hand or subdial may provide secondary information.

  1. Inspect the dial. Note labels, numerals, colors, apertures, and distinct scales.
  2. Match each hand to its scale. Do not assume all hands share a pivot or use the same markings.
  3. Read the primary time first. Then interpret any secondary indication, such as home time or solar time.
  4. Check the watch’s instructions if unclear. A model’s manual or manufacturer description can clarify an ambiguous hand-to-scale assignment.

This is a practical method, not a universal standard for dial layouts. The examples below illustrate different arrangements and functions.

How a regulator-style dial separates time

A regulator-style display separates the hour, minute, and seconds indications rather than presenting them as conventional hands sharing a central pivot. Patek Philippe describes its Annual Calendar Regulator Ref. 5235/50R-001 as having three separate display zones for hours, minutes, and seconds. Read each zone against its own markers; do not assume a fixed position for any of them across all regulator watches. Patek Philippe’s Complications Collection describes this example. A. Lange & Söhne also identifies a regulator-style dial on the Richard Lange Perpetual Calendar Terraluna, showing that the category is not limited to one model.

Off-centre displays and moving indications

An off-centre time display changes where the time indication sits on the dial; it does not, by itself, tell you what a hand means. A. Lange & Söhne describes the LANGE 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar as using an off-centre dial configuration, with calendar indications arranged on a peripheral ring.

A moving subsidiary dial is a different case. The Richard Lange Tourbillon Pour le Mérite has a pivoting subsidiary dial that moves across a cut-out part of the hour dial. If an indication shifts position, consult the model’s markings or instructions rather than assuming the movement is decorative or that it changes the time-reading rule. See A. Lange & Söhne’s Grand Complications descriptions.

How to read multiple time indications

Some asymmetrical dials show more than one time reference. Identify which display is local time and which, if present, shows home time or other zones.

GMT and dual time

The Fondation Haute Horlogerie explains that a GMT watch’s central hour and minute hands show local time, while an additional hand points to home time on a 24-hour scale. On a dual-time watch, home time may instead appear in a 12-hour subdial; a day/night indicator helps establish whether that second-zone time is daytime or nighttime. Read the added indication against its own scale rather than treating it as another ordinary minute hand. See the Fondation Haute Horlogerie’s guide to watch complications.

World time

A world-time watch combines central hands for local time with a 24-hour ring, a day/night indication, and a ring of city names representing time zones. The Fondation Haute Horlogerie’s method is to align the relevant city with the fixed indicator, then use the city ring and 24-hour ring to read other zones. The markings and setting mechanism vary by watch, so follow the model’s instructions if the indicator or ring is not clear.

Why two minute hands may show different kinds of time

Two similar-looking hands do not necessarily duplicate one another. Blancpain describes a running equation-of-time display with one minute hand for mean solar time—the civil time shown by ordinary clocks and watches—and another for true solar time. In this case, the hands indicate different time systems. Identify each hand’s purpose from the dial labels or model documentation before reading either one. See Blancpain’s explanation of its complications.

Quick guide to common asymmetrical layouts

Layout or function What to identify How to read it
Regulator-style Separate hour, minute, and seconds zones Read each indication against its own markers. The zones’ positions are not universal.
Off-centre display The primary time display and any peripheral calendar indications Read the time from its assigned display; read calendar information on its own scale or markers.
GMT or dual time Local-time hands and the separate home-time indication Use the 24-hour scale for a GMT hand, or the 12-hour subdial and day/night indicator for dual time.
World time Local-time hands, city ring, 24-hour ring, and fixed indicator Align the relevant city with the indicator, then read other zones from the rings.
Equation of time The hands for mean solar time and true solar time Read each hand according to its stated time system; they are not redundant minute hands.

These layouts differ in the information shown and in how indications are assigned to hands and scales. There is no single legibility rating or reading rule that applies to every asymmetrical dial.
