Favre-Leuba’s history shows that heritage and technical achievement do not guarantee survival through a market upheaval. The watchmaker responded to the shift toward electronic timekeeping with quartz experiments while continuing to offer mechanical watches, but its scale contracted sharply and the founding family eventually relinquished the business. Its 2024 relaunch and 2026 activity show a brand in motion—not proof that it has regained its former scale or financial strength.
What does “second-oldest” mean in Favre-Leuba’s story?
Favre-Leuba is often positioned as the world’s second-oldest watch company, but the sources available here do not establish that as an independently verified global ranking. The chronology itself needs care: the company’s official history and Europa Star both trace Abraham Favre’s independent watchmaking business in Le Locle to 1737; Europa Star dates the Favre-Leuba partnership with watch merchant Auguste Leuba to 1814. The earlier date belongs to the family’s watchmaking record, while 1814 marks the partnership associated with the Favre-Leuba watch factory. Favre-Leuba’s official history and Europa Star’s 2024 historical feature provide those dates.
What did Favre-Leuba achieve before the crisis?
Favre-Leuba had a substantial record of product and technical development. Europa Star documents the in-house FL101 calibre in 1955, the Bivouac in 1962, and the Bathy in 1968. The company describes the latter instruments as pioneering, and claims around some “first” achievements should be read as brand or publication attribution rather than independently settled rankings. These milestones show that the company had demonstrated technical capability; they do not, on their own, explain why it later struggled.
How did Favre-Leuba respond to electronic watches?
As electronic watches changed the market from the 1970s onward, Favre-Leuba experimented with quartz while keeping mechanical models in its range. Europa Star’s archive account describes both the technology shift and the company’s parallel product lines. That response matters because the story is not simply one of refusing change: the brand did adapt its offerings. But offering a new technology did not prevent a severe contraction in scale.

Europa Star’s 2024 feature reports that an archive document described annual capacity of about 300,000 pieces in 1964, while a 1994 archive item reported 20,000 pieces thirty years later. These are historical figures relayed by Europa Star, not a verified, like-for-like audited production series: one is capacity and the later figure is reported volume. They indicate the scale of the decline described in the archive, but should not be treated as a precise measure of annual output across the period. Europa Star connects the contraction to the family eventually relinquishing the business.
What happened to ownership?
Favre-Leuba’s official history says the family was compelled to sell the brand in the 1980s and that ownership changed hands multiple times. Europa Star names successive groups including Saphir, Benedom, Jacques-Bénédict Time Force Group, LVMH, Valfamily, and Tata. Titan Company’s 2019 investor presentation says Titan acquired Favre-Leuba in 2012. These sources do not establish a complete, dated legal chain through every transition or identify the current ultimate owner after later restructuring and revival. The documented outcome is sale and changing ownership, not evidence that the company went bankrupt.

What does the 2024 relaunch—and 2026 activity—show?
At Geneva Watch Days in August 2024, Favre-Leuba relaunched with 22 references across the Chief, Deep Raider, and Sea Sky collections. The company stated a launch-era price range of CHF 2,250–4,375 and an ambition to reach several thousand pieces annually within three years. That production figure was a target, not a reported result. In the launch release, CEO Patrik Hoffmann described a goal “to restore this legendary brand to its rightful place in the global watchmaking landscape”—an expression of the company’s ambition, not evidence that the goal has been achieved. Favre-Leuba’s August 2024 release gives the launch details.
The brand’s official 2026 materials report a Watches and Wonders debut, active collections, and servicing support. These are concrete signs of present-day brand activity. They do not establish profitability, market share, production at the former scale, or a durable commercial recovery. A relaunch is a beginning to assess, not a verdict on the business.

What can watch brands learn from Favre-Leuba’s crisis?
- Heritage is an asset, not a shield. A history reaching back to the eighteenth century did not prevent pressure when the market’s technology and expectations changed.
- Adapting products is not the same as adapting the business. Quartz experiments alongside mechanical watches show a product response, while the reported contraction shows that technical range alone did not preserve scale.
- Scale can matter as much as invention. The historical figures are not directly comparable audited output, but they convey the magnitude of the decline described by Europa Star.
- Control and continuity are part of resilience. Once the founding family relinquished the brand, repeated ownership changes became part of its history; the available sources do not prove what role any one change played in its performance.
- Renewal needs evidence beyond visibility. New collections, a major watch-show debut, and service infrastructure establish activity. Sales, sustained production, and financial results would be needed to judge whether recovery is durable.
The bounded lesson is not that one strategy guarantees survival. Favre-Leuba’s record instead separates technical credentials, adaptation, business scale, ownership, and renewed activity—factors that can move in different directions during a crisis.
