Garmin’s Body Battery, Training Readiness, and Recovery Time are related estimates, but they answer different questions. Body Battery estimates your energy reserves; Training Readiness summarizes recent training and recovery factors; Recovery Time estimates when you may be recovered for another workout of similar intensity. None is a medical assessment or a stand-alone command to train or rest.
What each Garmin metric measures
| Metric | What it estimates | What goes into it |
|---|---|---|
| Body Battery | Your estimated energy reserves during the day, shown on a 5–100 scale. | Heart-rate variability (HRV), stress, sleep, and activity. Garmin says daily Charged and Drained totals cover 24 hours and reset at midnight; some shorter personalized insights may use another timeframe. Garmin Body Battery FAQ |
| Training Readiness | A continuously updated 1–100 summary of recent training and recovery context. | Acute Load, HRV Status, Recovery Time, the previous night’s Sleep Score, sleep history over the previous three nights, and stress history over the previous three days. Garmin Training Readiness FAQ |
| Recovery Time | An estimate of how long until you may be recovered for another workout of similar intensity. Garmin describes a possible range from zero hours to four days. | It is calculated after recorded activities. On supported devices, the estimate can also take account of recovery and wellness information such as stress, sleep quality, further training intensity, and daily activity. Garmin Recovery Time FAQ |

Why Body Battery can be low after sleep
Sleeping for a long time does not guarantee a large overnight recharge. Body Battery is an estimate that also reflects stress and overall recovery, so elevated stress during sleep can limit charging. Garmin lists possible contributors to stress such as alcohol, illness, discomfort, excessive physical activity, temperature, noise, and disrupted sleep. Garmin also cautions that how rested you feel and your score may not align. Garmin Body Battery FAQ
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA low reading is therefore a clue about the watch’s estimate, not proof of why you slept poorly or how your body is functioning. Treat how you feel and any symptoms as separate information rather than trying to make the score explain them.

What a Training Readiness score can—and cannot—tell you
Training Readiness combines several recent inputs rather than relying on one number such as HRV or last night’s sleep alone. Garmin says it is recalculated and updated through the day, so the score can change as the relevant context changes. Use it as a summary of Garmin’s view of your recent training and recovery—not as an instruction to work out or skip one.
HRV is one input, not a stand-alone verdict. Garmin defines it as variation in the time between consecutive heartbeats and uses it in measurements including Body Battery and stress. Its Health Snapshot information distinguishes SDRR from RMSSD and describes HRV as sensitive and challenging to interpret. The cited Garmin material does not establish a universal personal threshold or a rule that higher is always better. Garmin HRV explanation and Garmin Health Snapshot

How Recovery Time differs from readiness
Recovery Time is tied to the time Garmin estimates before another workout of comparable intensity. Training Readiness is broader: it combines training, HRV, recovery, sleep, and stress history into a changing score. A Recovery Time countdown reaching zero is not a requirement to remain inactive until then; it is an estimate, and Garmin may recalculate it after another recorded activity. Your Readiness score and Recovery Time can consequently tell different parts of the same story.

Where Training Status and Training Load fit
Training Status
Training Status is a separate interpretation of fitness changes relative to training trends, not another name for readiness. Garmin says most devices use a VO2 max estimate or HRV Status together with Acute Load. Feature availability depends on the device. Garmin Training Status FAQ

Training Load
Training Load is a family of EPOC-based metrics. Garmin defines Acute Load as a weighted sum of exercise-load measures from the past seven days; Chronic Load as a weighted average of acute-load scores over 28 days; and Load Ratio as Acute Load divided by Chronic Load. These are Garmin’s definitions and their availability can vary by compatible device. Garmin Training Load FAQ

Body Battery stays near 5 on a new or reset device
Garmin says a new or factory-reset device may need about 5–7 days to learn a Body Battery baseline. The score can remain near 5 during that period. If a baseline is lost, recalibration can also take several days. Garmin Body Battery FAQ

The watch was off your wrist for hours
Consistent wear gives Garmin more continuous data. If the device is off your body for several hours or longer, Garmin says Body Battery resumes from a model-based estimate. Garmin also says a compatible device worn consistently provides the most accurate Body Battery and all-day stress tracking; data from another Garmin device that does not support Body Battery is not included in Body Battery calculations.

Recovery Time is calculated at the end of recorded activities and recalculated rather than simply added when multiple activities are recorded. Check compatibility before choosing a Garmin watch
Do not assume every model in a product family—or every higher-priced watch—includes all these metrics. Check the exact model’s owner’s manual and feature support pages for the measurements you want. Garmin’s Recovery Time documentation lists compatible devices, and support differs by model. Body Battery support, Training Readiness support, and Recovery Time support
These metrics are estimates, not diagnoses or medical clearance. If you are ill, injured, or otherwise concerned about exercising, the watch’s scores alone cannot settle whether training is appropriate.
