A bevel is a sloped surface cut along an edge, replacing a sharp, square corner. On a watch it may appear on the case or on movement parts; when the edge is carefully finished and polished, watchmakers often call the work anglage. A bevel is not the same as a bezel: the bezel is a separate case component around the crystal.
What does a bevelled edge mean?
Imagine a cube with its 90-degree corner cut away. The new slanted face is a bevel. In watchmaking, it is an angled surface between a component’s main surface and its side, rather than a square corner. A bevel can be left with different finishes; the geometry alone does not mean it has been polished.
Beveling, chamfering and anglage are often used for overlapping ideas in watchmaking. Usage can vary, so the words do not always indicate three sharply distinct techniques. Monochrome’s bevel glossary describes the angled edge, while Patek Philippe’s glossary discusses chamfering as cutting or filing away an edge and polishing it.
Where can you find bevels on a watch?
Bevels can be applied to the exterior case as well as to movement components. Inside the movement, bridges and plates are among the parts discussed in technical descriptions of anglage. A polished bevel traces the outline of a component and can make its shape stand out; it is a finishing detail, not a separate part.

Step-by-step finishing from rough to flawless shine. No dilution required.
- INDUSTRIAL-GRADE POLISHING PERFORMANCE: Formulated with 99.3% pure diamond powder-over 90% of which are spherical-for ultra-uniform, scratch-free mirror results. These micron-sized particles are exceptionally hard, heat-resistant, and stay consistent under high-friction conditions while remaining gentle on gemstones.
- ADVANCED FORMULA: A neutral pH, dye-free, odorless formula that won't stain, corrode, or damage sensitive materials such as glass, sapphires, resin, camera lenses, or precious metals. This high-strength compound offers highly efficient polishing that saves both time and effort. The color-free formula also ensures faster cutting with no risk of staining or contamination, even on high-permeability materials.
- INNOVATIVE CAP DESIGN: Unique rubber-capped syringe keeps the paste moist and prevents waste. Easy to control for both hand and machine polishing—just apply and gently buff with wool buffs, leather strops, cotton swabs, or cloths to achieve a professional, mirror-like shine.
- MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS: Functions as a glass polishing compound, diamond polishing compound, valve lapping compound, honing compound, stropping compound, grinding compound, and metal or stone finishing paste—all in one versatile kit. Suitable for removing scratches on glass, watch crystals, phone screens, and mirrors, and for polishing metals such as knives, rings, guns, and jewelry. Also effective for restoring marble, granite, and epoxy resin surfaces, or for sharpening and surface finishing.
What is anglage?
Anglage is the watchmaking term commonly used for beveling or chamfering, particularly when referring to the finishing of movement components. A polished bevel catches light along the edge and emphasizes the component’s outline. Patek Philippe’s glossary describes its chamfering process this way: “Here, the sharp edge between the surface and the flank of a component is manually cut or filed away to a smooth 45° curve, followed by polishing with a mechanical buffer.” That is the manufacturer’s description, not a universal angle or rule for every bevel.
A chamfer may also be intended to reduce a sharp edge that could be vulnerable to wear, but that possible purpose does not make every bevel a guarantee of greater durability.

Are watch bevels always made by hand?
No. Monochrome’s technical article on movement finishing describes both manually guided work and machine-produced chamfers. Machine-made chamfers may receive additional hand finishing, while refined manual work involves attention to the bevel’s angle and width. A finished bevel’s appearance alone does not establish how it was made.

No. A bevel is an angled face at an edge; a bezel is a distinct watch case part around or holding the crystal. The words sound alike, but they refer to different things. Monochrome’s bezel glossary and Patek Philippe’s glossary distinguish the component from the angled edge.
