On the common two-pusher design, the upper pusher starts and stops timing, and the lower pusher resets the display after timing has stopped. Pusher positions, register layout and operating details vary by watch, so use the instructions for your specific model.
What a chronograph does
A chronograph adds elapsed-time measurement to a watch’s ordinary time display. Its chronograph hand and smaller subdials—also called registers—show how much time has passed while the watch continues keeping time. The exact information displayed and the maximum interval measured depend on the watch’s movement.

The central hand that moves when the chronograph is running may be separate from the hand that shows ordinary seconds. On some dials, the regular-seconds hand is in a small register instead. Check the dial and manual before assuming a stationary central hand means something is wrong.

- Check the watch and its zero position. Make sure the watch is running and the chronograph hands are at zero. Seiko advises checking the zero position and sufficient winding for its specified 8R46 and 8R48 movements.
- Unlock the pushers if required. Some chronographs have screw-lock pushers that must be released before use. Follow your model’s instructions; this step does not apply to every watch.
- Start timing. On the common layout, press the upper pusher once. It is often at 2 o’clock, as in TUDOR’s example, but pusher placement is not universal.
- Stop timing. Press the same pusher again. Read the elapsed time from the chronograph hand and the relevant register or registers. The readout and precision depend on the model.
- Reset after stopping. Press the lower pusher to return the chronograph hands to zero. It is often at 4 o’clock, as in TUDOR’s example. Do not assume the reset pusher behaves the same way while timing is running: consult the manual before pressing it.
For model-specific instructions, see TUDOR’s chronograph tutorial, Grand Seiko’s instructions for screw-lock buttons and chronograph operation, and the manual supplied for your own watch.

What the subdials measure—and how long the watch can time
Registers commonly track elapsed seconds, minutes or hours, but their positions and roles vary. Identify each one from the dial markings or the watch’s manual rather than relying on a standard layout. Hamilton’s chronograph watch guide describes common register functions.
Measuring capacity is movement-specific. For example, Seiko says the chronograph in caliber 8R46 measures up to 30 minutes, while the 8R48 measures up to 12 hours. Those figures apply to those named calibers, not to chronograph watches as a category. See Seiko’s 8R46 and 8R48 instructions for the relevant operation and specifications.

Useful variations: cumulative timing and the tachymeter
Cumulative timing
Some chronographs let you stop and restart the timer so that separate intervals add together. This can be useful when measuring several stages of an activity without resetting between them. The controls and reset behavior vary by model: Grand Seiko describes cumulative elapsed-time measurement, while Shinola documents model-family-specific pusher behavior and directs users to the manual for advanced functions. Follow your own watch’s instructions rather than applying a sequence from another brand.
Relevant maker instructions include Grand Seiko’s chronograph guide and Shinola’s chronograph tutorial.

Using a tachymeter
A tachymeter scale can estimate average speed over a known distance; it does not measure distance by itself. Start the chronograph at the beginning of the distance, stop it at the end, then use the stopped chronograph hand’s position against the scale. For a scale calibrated to 1,000 meters, Patek Philippe’s example uses one kilometer: start at one kilometer marker and stop at the next. The reading depends on that distance and the scale’s units. Grand Seiko also describes using a tachymeter to estimate productivity per unit of time. See Patek Philippe’s caliber CH 29-535 PS Q instructions and Grand Seiko’s chronograph guide.

- The pushers will not operate: Check whether they are screw-lock type and, if so, unlock them as the manual directs.
- The display does not match a familiar diagram: Register positions and elapsed-time capacity vary by design and movement. Use the markings and model instructions to identify each indicator.
- The central hand is still: It may be the chronograph hand, which moves only when timing is active, while ordinary seconds are shown elsewhere. Confirm your dial layout.
- You want to reset while timing: Do not assume this is safe or that it will have the expected effect. Reset behavior can differ; stop first unless your model’s manual specifically instructs otherwise.
