What Is a Telemeter? A Guide to the Watch Scale and Its Other Meanings

A watch telemeter scale uses the time between seeing and hearing an event to estimate distance. The word also refers to rangefinders and remote-measurement equipment.

A telemeter is a device or scale used to measure distance or other quantities remotely. On a watch, a telemeter scale estimates how far away an event is by timing the gap between seeing it and hearing it—for example, a lightning flash and its thunder. The word also describes remote-measurement equipment that sends readings to a receiver, so context matters.

What does a telemeter mean on a watch?

On a suitable chronograph, the telemeter is a marked scale that converts elapsed time into an approximate distance. Start the chronograph when you see an event, then stop it when you hear the sound it produces. The chronograph hand points to the estimated distance on the scale.

Lightning and fireworks are common examples: light reaches you almost immediately, while sound takes longer to travel. The interval between seeing the flash and hearing the report is therefore useful for estimating how far away the event occurred. Citizen describes this use of a watch telemeter scale: Citizen’s guide to the telemeter.

How to use the scale

  1. When you see the flash or other visible event, start the chronograph.
  2. When you hear the corresponding sound, stop the chronograph.
  3. Read the chronograph hand against the telemeter scale to get an approximate distance, in the unit shown on that watch.

The result is an estimate, not a precision measurement. It depends on the time delay between the visible event and its sound reaching you.

Is a telemeter the same as a rangefinder?

In general reference usage, telemeter can also mean a rangefinder: an instrument for finding the distance to a remote object. A laser distance measurer is one example of that broader distance-measuring category; it is not the same thing as a telemetry system or a watch telemeter scale. The term’s rangefinder sense is recorded by Merriam-Webster, and a laser distance measurer is an example of the category described by Encyclopaedia Britannica.

How is a telemeter different from telemetry equipment?

In technical contexts, a telemeter is part of a telemetry system: equipment that measures a quantity at a remote point and transmits the result to a distant station for interpretation, display, or recording. The National Institute of Standards and Technology defines telemetry in terms of measuring quantities, transmitting the results to a distant station, and interpreting or recording them: NIST’s telemetry definition.

The measurement and transmission may serve very different purposes. A USGS groundwater report describes systems that measure quantities such as water level and send readings to a receiving site, using landline, radio, or satellite transmission: USGS report on telemetry for groundwater monitoring. In wireless medical telemetry, a patient-worn transmitter sends physiological information, including cardiac signals, by radio to a central monitoring station. The FDA page reproduces an FCC definition of this use as “the measurement and recording of physiological parameters and other patient-related information via radiated bi- or unidirectional electromagnetic signals”: FDA overview of medical telemetry systems.

Which meaning should you use?

  • On a chronograph watch: the telemeter is a scale for estimating distance from the delay between seeing and hearing an event.
  • For a standalone measuring instrument: a telemeter may mean a rangefinder that measures distance to an object.
  • In monitoring and instrumentation: a telemeter measures remotely and sends readings to a receiving station as part of a telemetry system.

For a watch, the first meaning is usually the relevant one. The shared idea is measurement at a distance, but the device and method differ by context.
