Grand feu enamel is glass-like enamel fused to a surface in a high-temperature firing. On a watch dial, artisans apply enamel to a metal base and fire it repeatedly, building a smooth, often glossy finish. “Grand feu” means “great fire,” but it does not specify one universal temperature: watchmakers describe workshop processes around or above 800°C, while the term is also used for a distinct high-fire ceramic technique.
What grand feu means on a watch dial
Enamel is made from mineral or glass-derived powder, often combined with metal oxides for color. Unlike ordinary paint, it is not simply left to dry: heat fuses it into a hard, glass-like surface on a prepared metal base. Fondation Haute Horlogerie describes grand feu as higher-temperature firing, typically 820–850°C (Fondation Haute Horlogerie).
That range is a typical description, not a strict cutoff. Girard-Perregaux describes firing watch dials in a kiln at 800°C, while Ulysse Nardin describes firings above 800°C. These are workshop-specific accounts of the craft, rather than competing measurements of a single universal standard (Girard-Perregaux; Ulysse Nardin).
How artisans make a grand feu enamel dial
- Prepare the metal base. The dial blank must be suitable for enamelling and prepared to receive the coating.
- Apply enamel. The artisan places enamel powder or a prepared mixture on the base. Color and decorative elements are added according to the intended design.
- Fire and cool the dial. Heat fuses the enamel to the base. After cooling, another application can be added and fired.
- Repeat and finish. Successive layers build the surface; artisans may polish or otherwise finish it as part of the process.
The number of applications depends on the design and workshop. Girard-Perregaux says its dials typically undergo five to ten cycles, cooling between applications; Ulysse Nardin describes four to five successive layers in one workflow. Neither figure defines every grand feu dial (Girard-Perregaux; Ulysse Nardin).

Firing requires close judgment. The right temperature and duration can vary with the baseplate, the amount of enamel, and small temperature changes. The artisan watches for vitrification—the point at which the enamel has fused—and removes the dial when it is ready. Repeated firing carries a risk of bubbles, cracks, and other flaws; a defective dial may be rejected (Girard-Perregaux).
Grand feu and petit feu: the distinction in French faience
Grand feu and petit feu are also used to describe French ceramic decoration. In that context, the Metropolitan Museum of Art describes grand feu as applying glaze and metallic oxides before a single high-temperature firing, around 1650°F (900°C). For petit feu, the ceramic body is fired first, then glazed and decorated and fired again at a lower temperature. The lower firing permits a broader range of colors and finer painted detail (The Metropolitan Museum of Art).

This ceramic comparison should not be mapped directly onto watchmaking. Watch-dial descriptions of grand feu commonly involve repeated applications and firings on a metal base; the Met’s account concerns a particular French faience process.
What grand feu enamel looks like—and what can damage it
Fired enamel is valued for its glossy appearance, saturated color, resistance to tarnishing, and color that can last well. Those material qualities do not make a dial indestructible: Fondation Haute Horlogerie notes that enamel can chip if knocked (Fondation Haute Horlogerie).

Ulysse Nardin says its fired finish cannot be polished or altered after firing. That means damage or a process flaw may not be straightforward to correct; the exact repair options depend on the dial and the maker’s approach (Ulysse Nardin).

Grand feu describes high-fire enamelling; other terms identify ways of constructing or decorating an enamel design. Cloisonné uses compartments formed with wires, while champlevé, paillonné, and grisaille are other distinct traditional techniques. Such methods can be used with enamel, but they are not alternative names for grand feu (Patek Philippe).
