What is Hublot Magic Gold?
Magic Gold is not ordinary 18-karat gold. Hublot describes it as a material combining 24-karat gold and boron carbide, a ceramic, to create an 18-karat gold material. The company says it developed Magic Gold with EPFL and presented it in 2011 as a world first. Hublot’s account of Magic Gold describes the ingredients as fusing together.
That composition is the source of the material’s unusual proposition: retain the identity of 18-karat gold while making a watch component that Hublot says is substantially harder and more resistant to scratches than conventional gold.
How does Hublot say Magic Gold is made?
Hublot says Magic Gold is manufactured in-house at its Manufacture in Nyon, Switzerland. Its high-level description is that liquid gold is injected at very high pressure into cold-pressed boron-carbide components, producing a combination of gold and ceramic. The public descriptions do not specify the pressure, temperature, ingredient proportions, or a complete sequence of production steps. Those details should not be inferred from the phrase “high pressure” or from the finished material’s properties.
How hard is Magic Gold?
Hublot’s anniversary material page compares hardness using the Vickers scale: it gives standard 18-karat gold as 400 Vickers, hardened steel as 600 Vickers, and Magic Gold as close to 1,000 Vickers. These are the brand’s published comparisons, not independently verified test results; the page does not state a test protocol. Hublot’s figures and comparison are therefore best read as manufacturer claims rather than a universal ranking of these materials.

Is Magic Gold scratch-proof?
Hublot calls Magic Gold scratch-resistant and describes it as patented. Its “scratch-proof” wording is promotional language, not an absolute guarantee that a watch cannot be scratched or damaged. The cited company pages do not establish independent scratch testing under defined conditions, and “scratch-resistant” should not be read as “indestructible.” Hublot’s Innovative Materials page presents the brand’s own description.
In a separate company announcement, Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe said: “Twelve years ago, Hublot invented scratch-resistant 18-karat gold and named it Magic Gold.” That is Guadalupe’s statement on behalf of the company, not independent confirmation of the material’s history or performance. Where does Magic Gold appear in Hublot watches?
Magic Gold can be used for specific watch components rather than necessarily making up an entire watch. For example, Hublot’s Big Bang Unico Ceramic Magic Gold, reference 421.CM.1130.RX, pairs a polished Magic Gold bezel with a black ceramic case. Hublot’s product page lists a 44 mm case, 100 m / 10 ATM water resistance, and approximately 72 hours of power reserve; those are the specifications shown on that page and may change or differ across regional listings.
