Its awards recognize how cars express Newport’s themes of History, Luxury, and Sport, alongside qualities such as originality, condition, provenance, and the connection a car inspires.
What is the Audrain Newport Concours?
Audrain Newport Concours d’Elegance is an automotive show in Newport, Rhode Island, where selected cars are displayed in classes and considered for awards. The event’s official description is explicit: “The Concours d’Elegance is not a trial of performance, but of elegance.” A car’s significance, design, preservation, and story matter more than how fast it can go.

The 2026 event took place on Sunday, October 4, at Fort Adams. Its official overview described a field of “Over 180 cars,” which is an organizer-published planned-field figure, not a verified final count. The application page for that edition is closed. The classes listed for 2026 ranged from Pegaso, Stout Scarab, Chrysler Imperial, Jaguar C and D Type, and Lamborghini Miura to Ferrari race cars, Rolls-Royce Phantoms, motorcycles and scooters, and three Thirty Under 30 groupings. That lineup was specific to the 2026 edition, not a permanent list of categories. Audrain Newport Concours

A concours is a curated display in which automobiles are grouped and judged, often for design, authenticity, preservation, and historical importance. Audrain Auto Museum traces the modern form to French displays of coach-built cars, presented by manufacturers and wealthy owners as expressions of fashion, technology, and status. There is no precise founding date established here, and judging systems vary by event; Audrain’s approach should not be treated as a universal formula. What judges consider at Audrain
Audrain describes its method as a variation on what is often called “French” judging. The event asks how a car expresses one or more of Newport’s three attributes: History, Luxury, and Sport. Its published explanation also emphasizes the car’s originality and condition, its history, and the owner’s involvement. As Audrain puts it, “Most importantly we will be seeking an emotional connection with the vehicles selected for awards.”
This means a pristine restoration is not automatically the most compelling entry. A car’s documented past, the way it has been preserved, and an owner’s relationship with it can contribute to its appeal. Entrants may opt out of award review.

How formats can differ
To understand any concours judging system, look at the event’s own rules and ask:
- Class eligibility and theme: Which makes, eras, body styles, or types of vehicle belong in each class?
- Design and styling: How much weight does the event give to form and visual character?
- Authenticity, originality, and condition: Does judging favor factory-correct details, preservation, restoration quality, or some combination?
- Provenance and historical significance: What documentation and historical context are relevant?
- Criteria and personal response: Are judges working from a detailed scorecard, a more interpretive approach, or a balance of the two?
These are useful comparison points, not a shared rulebook. For a concrete example of a formal system, the Jaguar Clubs of North America’s 2026 Concours d’Elegance Rule Book and Judges’ Instruction Manual explains that organization’s rules; it is not Audrain’s judging standard.

What awards are given at Audrain?
Audrain says it awards first-, second-, and third-in-class trophies and ribbons. First-in-class winners then compete separately for the Willie K. Vanderbilt Trophy. Best of Show and special awards are also part of the event. The published award structure distinguishes success within a class from the separate competition among class winners.
