What makes the Maruman “Bike chain” distinctive?
Watch writer Tomas Rosputinsky describes the bracelet as sturdy-looking and visually assertive. Its center is made from eight thin rings arranged in two rows; together, they create an arrowhead pattern pointing toward the watch head. Regular cuts in the pins add to the snake-skin or chain-like effect that gives the design its nickname. Fratello’s account of the bracelet also notes visible Maruman branding and a stylized logo inside the opened clasp.
The clasp is described as short, with five positions for adjusting the bracelet’s length. Rosputinsky also observed the inscription “E/P.PAT.EP,” but the article does not identify a corresponding patent filing. The inscription alone is not evidence of a verified patent record.
When was it made?
Rosputinsky estimates that the design probably dates to the mid-to-late 1960s. That is an enthusiast’s estimate, not a documented production date for a verified reference. His article gives a brief company history, saying Maruman began in 1950 as Nippon Gold Metal Industry Co. Limited, changed its name to Maruman Co. Limited in 1952, and initially focused on watches. No primary corporate history is cited in that account.

Will a Maruman “Bike chain” fit your watch?
Do not assume compatibility from the Maruman name or the bracelet’s appearance. The Fratello example is reported to taper from 18 mm at the watch end to 16 mm at the clasp. Separately, an eBay seller describes a gold-plated Maruman 50H24 bracelet as 19 mm wide. Those measurements may refer to different versions; neither establishes a standard width for the whole family.
- Measure the bracelet’s end-link width and compare it with the watch’s lug width.
- Inspect how the bracelet attaches, including whether its end pieces are straight or curved, and confirm that the attachment suits your watch case.
- Check the bracelet’s length, condition, and completeness, including links and end pieces.
Rosputinsky recounts that collector Heuer_Loon modified one bracelet to accept different curved end links. That example shows modification is possible, not that an unmodified bracelet will fit a particular watch. The author also says he had not linked his own bracelet to any particular watch.

Is the gold-plated version rare?
Rosputinsky says steel examples are difficult to find and gold-plated ones are rarer, but provides no population figures. Treat that as his collecting impression, not a measured scarcity ranking. An eBay listing for a pre-owned gold-plated 50H24 example describes it as 19 mm wide and made in Japan; its seller’s description applies to that listing, not every Maruman bracelet.
The same listing showed a price of US $155. That is an individual seller’s asking price, not a market average or established valuation, and listings, condition, and prices change. Rosputinsky also recounts finding a new-old-stock example on eBay in 2015 for £20, then noting another example available when his article was published in 2020. These separate anecdotes do not establish current availability or investment value. View the cited eBay listing.

How does it compare with modern bracelets?
Rosputinsky identifies Uncle Seiko’s Razor Wire bracelet as a modern design inspired by the Maruman. It is a related design, not the original vintage Maruman bracelet. Availability and specifications can change, so check the maker’s current product information if considering it.
