ISO 6425 conformity means more than a high water-resistance number: it refers to a diver’s watch meeting a standard that covers multiple requirements and test methods. For an affordable watch, check whether the manufacturer documents conformity for the exact model or reference; a 100 m, 200 m, or 300 m rating alone does not establish it.
What ISO 6425 covers
ISO 6425:2018 is the fourth edition of the standard for diver’s watches and saturation diver’s watches. The International Organization for Standardization published it in October 2018 and last reviewed and confirmed it in 2024, so ISO currently lists that edition as current. Its scope is watches designed to withstand diving at depths of at least 100 m and equipped with a secured dive-time measuring system that can be read in darkness. The standard also specifies manufacturer-authorized marking. ISO’s official listing for ISO 6425:2018 describes its requirements and test methods.

Water resistance is only one part of the picture. Citizen says its diver’s watches conform to ISO 6425 and identifies additional considerations including readability, resistance to magnetic fields and shock, and strap strength. The complete standard is licensed; these summaries are not a substitute for its full test clauses.
Why a depth rating is not enough
A depth figure states a water-resistance rating, but it does not show that the watch meets the wider set of ISO 6425 requirements. A watch marked 100 m, 200 m, or 300 m should not be assumed to conform unless the manufacturer makes a model-specific claim. The stated scope’s minimum depth and darkness-readable dive-time system are not, by themselves, proof that a given watch passed every applicable requirement.
#1 Best Overall
- DIVER-INSPIRED DESIGN — Inspired by the sea, the MDV-106G is styled after classic dive watches and delivers 200-meter water resistance at an unbeatable price point. The black resin band and stainless steel case give it a classic look, while the anti-reverse rotary bezel adds authentic dive-watch character.
- STAINLESS STEEL CASE WITH SCREW-LOCK CROWN & CASEBACK — The MDV-106G features a stainless steel case and a reliable screw-lock crown for enhanced water resistance protection. Screw-down crown and screw-lock caseback work together to keep the movement sealed and secure during water activities — a construction standard found on dive watches far above this price range.
- LARGE FLUORESCENT HANDS & INDICES FOR INSTANT READABILITY — The dial features hands and hour indices with large fluorescent areas for easy reading in low-light and underwater conditions. The clean 3-hand analog layout with date display at 3 o'clock keeps the dial uncluttered and immediately legible at a glance.
- 44MM STAINLESS STEEL CASE | 22MM LUG WIDTH | MINERAL GLASS — The case measures 44mm in diameter, 12mm in height, with a 49mm lug-to-lug length and a standard 22mm lug width — making strap upgrades effortless with a vast range of aftermarket options. Mineral glass protects the dial from everyday scratches and impacts.
- 3-YEAR BATTERY & 200M WATER RESISTANCE — Powered by an SR626SW battery with an approximate 3-year life, the case measures 49.5 × 46.3 × 12.1mm and weighs 92 grams. At 200 meters of water resistance, the Duro is versatile and suitable for all situations — whether in the water, hiking, running, or at the office.
ISO is the standards body, not a product-review service or a recommendation of particular brands. ISO’s listing describes marking manufacturers are authorized to apply; Citizen uses the phrase “ISO-certified” when discussing its own marked models. For a purchase decision, rely on the manufacturer’s documented conformity claim for the exact reference rather than treating “certified” as an independent ISO endorsement.
How to check an affordable model
- Identify the exact reference. Record the model or reference number, not just the collection name. Similar-looking watches in one range can have different specifications.
- Find the manufacturer’s documentation. Check the official product page, specification sheet, manual, or other manufacturer material for an explicit ISO 6425 conformity statement tied to that reference. A general claim about the brand’s diver’s watches is not enough to verify every model.
- Check the markings and dive-time system. Review the watch and its documentation for the maker’s stated dive-watch marking, and confirm that the dive-time measuring system is secured and readable in darkness as required by the standard’s scope.
- Keep the claims separate. Note the water-resistance rating and the conformity statement as distinct specifications. If the manufacturer lists a depth rating but does not document ISO 6425 conformity for the exact model, treat conformity as unverified.
What to compare when buying
For two watches under consideration, compare the evidence rather than inferring compliance from price or appearance.

- Depth rating: What water resistance does the manufacturer state?
- Model-specific conformity: Does the manufacturer explicitly identify the exact reference as conforming to ISO 6425?
- Dive-time indication: Is the indicator secured and usable in darkness, as the standard’s scope specifies?
- Documentation: Can you find the claim in material from the manufacturer, rather than relying on a retailer’s shorthand?

What the published test summaries do—and do not—show
A 2025 Longines press release summarizes an immersion test as applying 25% excess pressure relative to the required water resistance. That is a manufacturer’s summary of a selected criterion, not a complete account of ISO 6425 or a replacement for the licensed standard. Do not use that figure alone to infer how a particular watch was tested or whether it conforms.
