What Makes a Dive Watch Water-Resistant, and How Much Resistance Do You Need?

A watch’s depth marking is not a practical dive limit. Understand the difference between general water resistance and a dive watch, and choose by activity and model-specific guidance.

A dive watch resists water because its case and seals are built and tested to limit water penetration under pressure. But a depth marking alone does not tell you whether a watch is suitable for swimming, snorkeling, or scuba diving. For scuba, choose a model its manufacturer explicitly documents for diving and follow that model’s instructions.

What makes a watch water-resistant?

Water resistance is a watch’s ability to resist water entering its case. Pressure rises with depth, increasing the demand on the watch’s seals and case. The exact construction and test protocol vary by model and manufacturer; there is no single case, crown, crystal, or gasket design that can be assumed for every water-resistant watch.

A depth or pressure marking is not a promise that the watch is suitable for every activity at that depth. ISO distinguishes general-purpose water-resistant watches from watches intended for scuba diving, so the number on an ordinary watch should not be treated as a practical swimming or diving limit.

How do water-resistance standards differ?

Two ISO standards address different kinds of watches:

Casio MDV-106B Series | Duro Diver-Style Watch | 200M Water Resistant | Stainless Steel Case | Unidirectional Bezel | Screw-Lock Crown | Date Display
  • DIVER-INSPIRED DESIGN — Inspired by the sea, the MDV-106G is styled after classic dive watches and delivers 200-meter water resistance at an unbeatable price point. The black resin band and stainless steel case give it a classic look, while the anti-reverse rotary bezel adds authentic dive-watch character.
  • STAINLESS STEEL CASE WITH SCREW-LOCK CROWN & CASEBACK — The MDV-106G features a stainless steel case and a reliable screw-lock crown for enhanced water resistance protection. Screw-down crown and screw-lock caseback work together to keep the movement sealed and secure during water activities — a construction standard found on dive watches far above this price range.
  • LARGE FLUORESCENT HANDS & INDICES FOR INSTANT READABILITY — The dial features hands and hour indices with large fluorescent areas for easy reading in low-light and underwater conditions. The clean 3-hand analog layout with date display at 3 o'clock keeps the dial uncluttered and immediately legible at a glance.
  • 44MM STAINLESS STEEL CASE | 22MM LUG WIDTH | MINERAL GLASS — The case measures 44mm in diameter, 12mm in height, with a 49mm lug-to-lug length and a standard 22mm lug width — making strap upgrades effortless with a vast range of aftermarket options. Mineral glass protects the dial from everyday scratches and impacts.
  • 3-YEAR BATTERY & 200M WATER RESISTANCE — Powered by an SR626SW battery with an approximate 3-year life, the case measures 49.5 × 46.3 × 12.1mm and weighs 92 grams. At 200 meters of water resistance, the Duro is versatile and suitable for all situations — whether in the water, hiking, running, or at the office.
Standard What it covers What the published scope establishes
ISO 22810:2010 General water-resistant watches Requirements and verification methods for general water resistance. ISO’s page says the standard was confirmed in 2021 and shows a systematic review opened in 2026; the outcome of that review is not established here.
ISO 6425:2018 Divers’ watches Its stated scope covers watches designed for at least 100 m and includes a secured dive-time measuring system visible in darkness. ISO confirmed this edition in 2024, and it remains current.

The standards’ accessible summaries do not provide a complete clause-by-clause account of their tests. Do not infer ISO 6425 compliance from a marketing phrase or a depth rating alone; look for an explicit model-specific compliance statement and documentation.

What do metres and bars mean on a watch?

Metres and bars are ways to express pressure resistance. An ISO explainer gives approximate equivalents of 1 bar of overpressure at 10 m of water depth and 5 bars at 50 m. These are pressure conversions, not recommendations to use a watch marked to a particular depth for swimming or diving to that depth.

A laboratory pressure rating does not guarantee performance in every real-world condition. The marking by itself does not account for the watch’s intended use, current condition, or the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions. In particular, do not read “30 m” as permission to swim or dive to 30 m.

How much water resistance do you need?

Choose according to the activity and the watch’s stated purpose—not by applying one depth number to every kind of water exposure.

Activity What to look for
Surface swimming Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact model. A general water-resistance rating alone does not establish that the watch is suitable for your intended use.
Snorkeling Check the model’s stated rating and instructions. The sources do not establish one universal rating for all snorkeling conditions.
Scuba diving Choose a watch explicitly documented by its manufacturer for diving. ISO 6425’s stated scope begins at 100 m, but that minimum does not establish a universally sufficient rating for every dive.

If you are asking whether you can scuba dive with a 100 m watch, the number alone cannot answer that. Verify that the manufacturer identifies that specific model as intended for diving, check any stated ISO 6425 compliance, and follow its instructions for use.

What does a dive watch add beyond a depth rating?

ISO 6425’s published scope identifies features beyond water resistance: a diver’s watch is designed for at least 100 m and has a secured dive-time measuring system visible in darkness. Those criteria distinguish the standard’s intended purpose from the general water resistance addressed by ISO 22810. The accessible summaries do not establish a universal design checklist for every compliant watch.

How are water-resistant watches tested?

Testing protocols depend on the manufacturer. For example, Rolex says it tests each watch’s hermetic properties in a hyperbaric tank using an exclusive protocol. The company states that its 50 m and 100 m watches are tested at pressure equivalent to, or up to 10% higher than, their rated depth. For its divers’ watches rated at 300 m or more, Rolex says the margin is 25%. These are Rolex-specific claims, not universal ISO requirements or a description of other manufacturers’ tests.

How should you check a particular watch?

  1. Identify the exact model. Find its model-specific manual or care information rather than relying on a generic description of the watch family.
  2. Match the stated purpose to your activity. For scuba, look for an explicit statement that the model is intended for diving; a depth marking alone is not enough.
  3. Check any standards claim. If ISO 6425 compliance matters to you, confirm that the manufacturer states it for that model. Do not infer compliance from styling or marketing language.
  4. Follow the maker’s care guidance. Ask the manufacturer or a qualified service provider about the watch’s condition and any inspection or pressure testing appropriate to that model.

The sources cited here do not establish a universal inspection or pressure-test interval. Use the maker’s care instructions for the specific watch rather than relying on a schedule applied to every model.
