A box, papers, a clean registry search, or convincing photos are useful evidence—but none alone proves authenticity or legal ownership.
Start by identifying the exact watch
Before discussing payment, establish what the listing claims to be. Record the brand, model, reference number, caliber, approximate production year, condition, and every included part. Compare the dial, case, bracelet or strap, and movement claims with examples of that reference from the relevant production period. The listing, photographs, paperwork, and seller’s description should tell a consistent story.

Compare prices with similar examples in similar condition. Asking prices are not completed-sale prices, so do not treat a listing price as proof of market value. A price far below comparable watches deserves a credible explanation, but price alone cannot authenticate a watch.

Check the seller and the watch’s history
Ask for identity, provenance, and service records
Get the seller’s name and contact information. Ask how they acquired the watch, what is known about its ownership history, and whether service records are available. Compare the serial number on the watch with the paperwork and record the seller’s answers in writing. Paperwork can support a history, but it can be separated from a watch or falsified; its presence does not prove that the watch is genuine or that the seller has clear title.

Search a stolen-watch registry
Before paying, search the serial number through a reputable watch registry. The Watch Register describes its database as a due-diligence resource and says it should be checked even when a watch comes with a box and papers. It also cautions that its database is not exhaustive because not every loss or theft is reported, and a search reflects the status recorded when the search is made; that status can change. A clear result is not proof of legal ownership. Baume & Mercier also points buyers to Enquirus as a resource for law enforcement and people buying pre-owned watches.
Arrange expert authentication
For a costly watch, arrange an inspection by a reputable independent watchmaker or dealer who has relevant expertise. Close visual inspection can reveal inconsistencies, but it cannot reliably rule out a sophisticated counterfeit, substituted parts, or alteration. A loupe and online checks are screening aids, not substitutes for qualified examination.

Brand-run certified pre-owned programs are another route where available, but their services and terms are brand-specific. Rolex says eligible watches in its Certified Pre-Owned program are authenticated in Rolex workshops, fully serviced and tested, carry a two-year international guarantee, and are sold only through certain authorized Rolex points of sale. Rolex states, “Only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch.” Do not assume an ordinary second-hand listing—or another brand’s program—provides the same process or guarantee. See Rolex Certified Pre-Owned for the program’s details.
Choose a purchase route with clear protections
Different routes shift authentication, payment, and return risks in different ways. Check the actual terms for the watch, seller type, region, and transaction method before committing.

| Purchase route | Authentication and service | Payment, inspection, and returns | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand-certified pre-owned | The brand’s program may authenticate and service eligible watches; the process and warranty depend on the brand and program. | Retail payment and return terms vary. | Confirm program eligibility, authorized point of sale, warranty coverage, and return terms for your region. |
| Marketplace professional dealer | Dealer and platform policies vary. Do not assume a platform’s checks replace independent authentication. | Terms vary by platform, seller type, and listing. Chrono24 states that its escrow holds payment until delivery, with a post-delivery holding/inspection period of 14 days for professional-dealer purchases. Its stated 14-day return right applies to professional dealers. | Confirm the platform’s current rules, inspection deadline, return process, fees, shipping, and any dealer warranty. |
| Private seller | Arrange independent authentication and do not assume manufacturer coverage. | Protections may be narrower or negotiated. Chrono24 states that private-seller transactions do not carry its 14-day return right and that its post-delivery holding/inspection period can be up to 7 days. | Confirm who holds the funds, the inspection and dispute deadlines, return agreement, seller identity, and shipping coverage in writing. |
The Chrono24 periods and return terms above describe that platform’s stated policy, not universal rules or a summary of legal rights in every jurisdiction. Read its current buyer protection information and the terms shown for your particular transaction.
Make payment and shipping part of the verification
For an in-person purchase
Choose a safe location and inspect the watch before money changes hands. If authenticity or condition cannot be established on the spot, make the sale conditional on an agreed inspection by a qualified watchmaker, with the terms and deadline written down.

For a remote purchase
Keep payment within a verified marketplace or an independently verified escrow service. Do not trust payment instructions forwarded by the seller as proof that an escrow arrangement is genuine; verify the service and transaction directly through its official channel. Before paying, establish who holds the funds, how long you have to inspect the watch, what return or dispute rights apply, how the watch will be tracked, and what shipping insurance actually covers.
Keep a complete record and inspect the delivered watch
Get a dated invoice or bill of sale naming the seller and identifying the watch by brand, model or reference, and serial number. It should also state the price, condition, and included items. Save the listing, photographs, messages, payment records, and any written promises about authenticity, service, returns, or delivery. The Watch Register’s Due Diligence Guidelines likewise recommend an invoice identifying both seller and watch, including the serial number.

Unless supported by documentation, treat service history as unknown. If you plan to wear an older watch near water, have its water resistance checked by a qualified professional rather than assuming it remains water resistant.
Know when to walk away
- The reference, caliber claim, photographs, paperwork, or description conflict.
- The seller will not provide their identity, explain provenance, or supply reasonable detailed photographs.
- The price is far below comparable examples and the seller cannot give a credible explanation.
- The seller pressures you to pay immediately or move outside the protected payment route.
- The serial number does not match the paperwork, or a registry or provenance check raises concerns.
- The seller’s purported escrow arrangement cannot be verified directly with the service.
Do not let urgency turn an unanswered question into an acceptable risk. If you cannot verify the watch, seller, and transaction terms to your satisfaction, do not pay.
