“Ultra-thin” describes the watch’s slim construction, not a different kind of calendar. A perpetual calendar is designed to account for varying month lengths and leap years. The engineering challenge is fitting that function alongside the timekeeping mechanism within a reduced vertical profile.

Keep two measurements separate: movement thickness describes the calibre alone; case thickness describes the watch’s overall height. For example, Bvlgari lists the BVL 305 movement in its titanium Octo Finissimo at 2.75 mm, while the watch’s case is 5.80 mm thick. Calling 2.75 mm the thickness of the whole watch would be incorrect.

How watchmakers fit the calendar into a shallow profile
Bvlgari’s published details illustrate the density of the design: the automatic BVL 305 has a micro-rotor and 408 components, with day and month displays, a retrograde date, and a retrograde leap-year indication. The manufacturer says the movement measures 36.6 mm by 2.75 mm and that the components occupy very limited space without reducing their dimensions. These specifications show the packaging challenge, but do not by themselves reveal every gear or the full construction of the calendar train.

Other slim perpetual calendars use different combinations of movement dimensions, displays, case materials, and additional functions. The “ultra-thin” label alone does not tell you how readable the calendar is, how much power reserve it offers, or how the watch should be handled.

These are distinct watches, not a controlled comparison: they differ in material, diameter, display, and other specifications. Compare the exact dimensions and functions you care about rather than inferring performance from the collection name or the word “ultra-thin.” These figures alone also do not establish which watch is the thinnest currently available.

A perpetual calendar is designed to account for calendar variations, but the term does not mean the watch needs no attention. Bvlgari states that the titanium Octo Finissimo’s calendar requires no adjustment until 2100. That is a claim about the cited model, not all perpetual calendars. The watch also has a 60-hour power reserve; if it stops or needs resetting, consult its instructions rather than assuming the calendar will resume correctly without intervention.

How to set or correct the calendar safely
There is no universal safe-hours rule for adjusting a calendar watch. Baume & Mercier says calendar watches may have an exclusion period and directs owners to the guide for the particular model. Its guidance says that if the guide specifies no exclusion range, its instructions treat the calendar as adjustable at any time. That guidance should not be applied automatically to a different brand or calibre.
- Identify the exact reference and calibre, using the case, warranty card, or purchase documents if needed.
- Find the official user guide for that reference and follow its sequence and any stated exclusion period. Bvlgari provides watch user manuals; Piaget links its model page to the relevant guide.
- If the watch’s guide is unavailable or does not resolve your situation, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider before adjusting it.
Water resistance and routine care are model-specific
The published ratings in the comparison range from 30 m for the cited titanium Bvlgari to 100 m for its carbon variant; Piaget lists 3 bar for the cited Polo. These are specifications for those references, not a general rating for ultra-thin perpetual calendars. Check the documentation for your own watch before exposing it to water.

Vacheron Constantin’s general care guidance advises avoiding frequent contact with water, oils, and cosmetics. When to leave adjustment or repair to a watchmaker
Do not assume a generic watch tool or an online repair procedure is appropriate for a specific perpetual calendar.
