A panda dial is a chronograph dial with a light-colored main face and contrasting dark sub-dials, most often white with black counters. The name describes the look, not a formal technical standard. Flip the colors—a dark face with light counters—and it is called a reverse panda.
What defines a panda dial?
The defining feature is the contrast between the main dial and its chronograph sub-dials: the main face is light, commonly white, cream, or silver, while the counters are dark, usually black. The visual resemblance to a panda gives the style its nickname.

The counters are chronograph sub-dials, but there is no single required layout. Two- and three-counter designs are both associated with the look. A familiar three-counter arrangement places the counters at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock, but that placement is typical rather than a rule. Chrono24’s overview of panda dials describes this common configuration.

A reverse-panda dial reverses the color scheme: its main dial is dark, commonly black, and its chronograph sub-dials are light. The terms describe the two contrasting layouts, not different chronograph functions. Fratello’s discussion of panda dials uses the same distinction.

Is “panda” an official watch specification?
No. “Panda” is an informal visual nickname, not a standardized technical term or a guarantee of a particular counter count or placement. Chrono24 notes that it is not an official watch name. Seiko likewise describes the word as a fan nickname: its historical collection page says a design with two black sub-dials against a white dial became known among Seiko fans as the “Panda.” Seiko’s historical chronograph collection documents that example.
How far back does the style go?
Chrono24 describes black-on-white chronograph dials as appearing in the 1960s. Seiko’s account places one popular panda design in that era and discusses the 1969 Caliber 6139 milestone in its chronograph history. These accounts establish notable examples and context, but they do not prove which watch first used the design or when the nickname first appeared across the industry.

Seiko’s Power Design Project collection also explains the familiar convention of a white background with contrasting black sub-dials. That describes the recognizable pattern; it does not make “panda” a formal specification.

How to identify one at a glance
- Look at the main dial: it should be light for a conventional panda, or dark for a reverse panda.
- Check the counters: a panda has dark chronograph sub-dials against the light face; a reverse panda has light counters against the dark face.
- Separate appearance from function: the nickname refers to the color contrast, while the sub-dials belong to the chronograph display.
