Its design and history make it a distinctive alternative to more familiar luxury chronographs, but the exact bracelet and calibre depend on the watch’s reference and era.
Why the Sport Classic Chronograph is distinctive
An integrated design, not a conventional lug-and-strap look
The most immediately recognizable feature is the wave bracelet, designed to flow into the case rather than attach through conventional, separate lugs. Phillips dates the Sport Classic family’s debut to 1977 and identifies the bracelet as a defining feature of the line. Its sculptural case and bracelet give the watch a more continuous, architectural profile than chronographs with traditional lugs.

Bracelet design changed over time, so “EBEL bracelet” does not describe one construction across every generation. In particular, the later 1911 chronograph used a link-style bracelet instead of the Sport Classic’s wave design.
An early chronograph with El Primero lineage
Phillips dates the Sport Classic Chronograph to 1982 and says early examples used Zenith El Primero movements. The El Primero connection is a notable part of the model’s identity: Phillips says EBEL helped revive the movement before its use in the automatic Daytona. It is a historical distinction, not evidence that every EBEL chronograph has the same movement or outperforms other luxury chronographs.

A distinctly period design with varied executions
The angular case, integrated bracelet and richly styled dial options give the watch a strong 1980s character. The range included different materials and finishes rather than one universal specification. For example, Phillips’ 2025 catalogue describes a circa-1990, 38 mm yellow-gold example with a mother-of-pearl dial and automatic calibre 400. That is one documented watch, not a specification that applies to all Sport Classic Chronographs.
How the Sport Classic and 1911 chronographs differ
The names mark different stages in EBEL’s chronology. Phillips dates the Sport Classic family to 1977, its chronograph to 1982, and the introduction of the 1911 collection to 1986, EBEL’s 75th anniversary. In the chronograph, the transition brought a link-style bracelet in place of the earlier wave design.

- Case diameter: 53.5mm (2.1")
- Metallic black resin case and top ring
- Stainless steel case back
- Reverse LCD display (black background with light digits) with time, seconds, day and date
- Functions include: chronograph, lap time, alarm, dual time, military time and backlight
Phillips’ collector guide also notes that movement markings and calibres can vary around the transition. The name alone is therefore not enough to identify a movement: use the reference, production period and calibre together.

How to identify the watch you are considering
Collection names can be misleading if treated as specifications. EBEL’s current product listing describes a 37 mm automatic Sport Classic with Roman numerals, a wave-link bracelet, sapphire crystal and 50 m water resistance; it does not identify that listed model as a chronograph. A Sport Classic label alone does not establish that a watch has a chronograph function or an El Primero movement.
For a vintage purchase, Phillips’ circa-1990 reference 8134901 is a useful documented example: 38 mm and automatic calibre 400. It is not a template for every watch in the line. Check the individual watch’s reference, movement, originality, bracelet links and fit, service records and condition. Seller documentation and inspection by a qualified watchmaker can help resolve uncertainty, particularly on older watches.
