The difference is what the seconds hand does: jumping seconds advances in discrete one-second steps, while retrograde seconds travels along an arc and returns to its starting point when it reaches the end. The names describe different kinds of motion—not a particular dial layout, reset interval, or universal mechanism.
How jumping seconds work
A jumping-seconds hand advances once per second rather than moving continuously around the dial. A. Lange & Söhne describes its jumping-seconds display as making 60 steps per minute. That is a description of the cited display, not a specification that should be applied to every jumping-seconds watch.

The company’s technical explanation describes one way to produce the jump: a five-point star works with a tensioned lever called a “flirt.” At the end of each second, a point on the star releases the lever; the lever rotates and transfers a step to the seconds hand. This is the mechanism described for the manufacturer’s example, not a definition of how all jumping-seconds watches are built. A. Lange & Söhne’s explanation of the jumping-seconds mechanism.
Jumping seconds refers to the seconds indication. It is distinct from jumping hours or jumping numerals, which describe other indications. Nor does the term fix the hand’s position: a seconds display can be central or off-centred, depending on the watch’s movement and dial architecture.

How retrograde seconds work
A retrograde-seconds hand moves across a curved scale instead of completing a full circle. At the end of its path, it returns to the beginning and starts across the arc again. The length of that path—and how long the hand takes to reach its end—depends on the design.
H. Moser & Cie.’s Endeavour Retrograde Seconds is one specific example: its seconds hand travels a 30-second arc before returning to its starting point. The company identifies the movement as automatic calibre HMC 252 and describes a newly designed rack on the dial side. Those details belong to this model; the 30-second interval is not a rule for retrograde seconds generally. H. Moser & Cie.’s Endeavour Retrograde Seconds.

How the displays compare
| Feature | Jumping seconds | Retrograde seconds |
|---|---|---|
| Hand’s path | Advances in discrete steps; the cited A. Lange & Söhne description specifies 60 steps per minute. | Travels along an arc, then returns to the beginning; the interval varies by design. |
| What the term identifies | The stepwise motion of the seconds hand. | The arc-shaped path and return of the seconds hand. |
| Dial position | Not fixed by the complication. A. Lange & Söhne’s Richard Lange Jumping Seconds has a large seconds display in a triangular, regulator-style layout. | Not fixed by the complication. The cited H. Moser & Cie. example places the display at 6 o’clock; Breguet’s Tradition Seconde Rétrograde 7097 places small seconds at 10 o’clock. |
| Example mechanism or specification | A. Lange & Söhne explains a star-and-flirt mechanism for its example. The Richard Lange Jumping Seconds uses manually wound calibre L094.1. | H. Moser & Cie. describes a dial-side rack for its example. Its HMC 252 calibre has a stated 72-hour power reserve. |
The model details in the table are manufacturer specifications for the named watches, not universal properties of either display. A. Lange & Söhne describes the Richard Lange Jumping Seconds’ regulator-style dial and movement on its product page. Breguet lists its Tradition Seconde Rétrograde 7097 with automatic movement 505SR1, a stated 50-hour power reserve, and a 3 Hz frequency on its product page.

- It tells you how the seconds indication moves. A jumping hand steps; a retrograde hand follows an arc and returns.
- It does not tell you where the seconds appear. Dial position and layout are choices made within a watch’s design.
- It does not establish a single reset interval or construction. The cited Moser example resets after 30 seconds, while the cited Lange explanation describes its own star-and-lever mechanism.
- It does not, by itself, establish greater accuracy. A. Lange & Söhne attributes precision in the Richard Lange Jumping Seconds to a combination of its constant-force escapement, jumping seconds, and ZERO-RESET mechanism; that is a product-specific manufacturer claim, not a general advantage of jumping seconds.
A. Lange & Söhne also attributes the first concept of a pocket watch with jumping seconds to Ferdinand Adolph Lange in 1867. That is the company’s historical attribution; the cited page does not provide an independent archival verification. The company’s mechanism and history page.

Which display are you looking at?
Watch the seconds hand through its full cycle. If it advances in one-second steps around its scale, it is a jumping-seconds display. If it traverses a limited arc and then snaps back to its origin, it is retrograde. A single glance can be misleading: the useful clue is whether the hand continues around a circle or returns after reaching the end of an arc.
