A retrograde seconds hand travels along a limited scale, then returns to its starting point; the display does not determine how the crown sets the time. For example, the H. Moser & Cie. Pioneer Retrograde Seconds reference 3250 uses crown position 1, while the cited Baume & Mercier procedure uses position 3. Do not transfer one model’s steps to another.
Before you turn the crown, identify the watch
- Find the brand and model or reference on the case, warranty card, or paperwork.
- Look up the official manual for that exact watch and check how its crown positions are defined.
- Check whether the crown screws down. If the manual describes a screw-in crown, unscrew it as instructed before setting the time; do not force a crown that resists.
- Follow the manual’s stated crown position and turning direction. If the watch has a date, use its specific date-setting instructions as well.
The two examples below show why checking the reference matters; they are not interchangeable procedures.

Example: H. Moser & Cie. Pioneer Retrograde Seconds, reference 3250
The October 2024 operating instructions define screw-in position X, winding position 0, and time-setting position 1. In this model, the retrograde display is a 30-second scale at 6 o’clock. Read the official H. Moser manual.
- Unscrew the crown counterclockwise; it moves to winding position 0.
- Pull the crown out to position 1.
- Turn the crown in either direction to set the minute hand. The hour hand is linked.
- Push the crown back to position 0 to restart the movement.
- Push and turn the crown clockwise to screw it back into position X for normal wear.
H. Moser says not to open the crown under water and states that the watch’s full water resistance is retained with the crown screwed in. Those cautions apply to this reference, not to every watch with a retrograde display.

Example: Baume & Mercier automatic with retrograde seconds and big date
The cited Baume & Mercier procedure sets the time with the crown in position 3; it is specific to an automatic hour-and-minute, retrograde-seconds, big-date configuration. Read the official Baume & Mercier procedure.
- Pull the crown to position 3.
- Turn it clockwise to advance the hour and minute hands to the desired time.
- When the time signal is announced, return the crown to position 1. Some models use a screw-in operation, so follow the instructions for the exact watch.
As you advance the hands past 12, check whether the date changes to distinguish noon from midnight. The cited procedure warns against using rapid date change from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m., while the movement is working to change the date. Do not apply that date-setting window to another model unless its manual says the same.

What to do if the crown or watch behaves unexpectedly
- If the crown resists, stop rather than forcing it.
- If the movement does not restart after you return the crown as directed, or the watch behaves differently from its manual, stop operating it.
- Contact the manufacturer or an authorized watchmaker for guidance on the exact reference.
